My 35 year old daughter finally killed a deer! She was in a blind three times, the first two times she shot and the arrows went right over the deer. Finally took it and shot the darned crossbow and it was shooting way high. My great niece missed a nice buck with the same bow. 😭😭 Anyway, we switched to another bow. Last night a lone doe came past, very cautious. Amanda was awkwardly situated, but I said if she was going to shoot, now was the time. She shot and I heard a thunk. Lost where the arrow went, but suspected low and back. Deer ran off maybe 60 yds and stood there, forever. Took a few steps and stood again. Few more, then she was gone. She wasn't in a hurry. Once we lost sight, we waited until near dark and got out of the blind. I now think she may have heard us leave. We went back this morning. No hair, no blood and the bolt was bearly in a log. Almost nothing on the bolt. So, she was on a deer trail leading towards a very steep ravine. Four of us spread out and after maybe 200 yds. Amanda yelled out that she found her. The deer was not bedded, just fell over dead. It was gut shot, so, we took the whole thing back to camp, ungutted. Hung it up, skinned it and took the quarters and back straps out. This avoided contaminating the good meat.

CONGRATS!! Great recovery effort with no hair or blood trail!! I really credit DougL for harping on backing out. That has been the ticket in a couple recoveries, for my family. Grateful to Doug

Backing out is almost always the best option. Hard to do sometimes, but necessary.

Ridge nailed it with "almost always". Yeah...."backing out" has been a standard procedure for me for many years especially on late hits and some marginal hits. Some situations I will follow-up vs next day when there's extremely warm overnite temps. Also imminent pending storms that could hinder tracking/recovery may be considered. Thinking more about it's.....hard to cookie cut what to do without actually being there.

We dropped the quarters off at a butcher, and a few hours later she was in the hospital. Nutrient difficiency which put her at heart attack risk due to Anorexia. 😭 Should be home today, hopefully.
