Congrats to the girls and thanks for thinning the herd. Deer eat very well around there, due to hundreds of acres of corn. No shortage of alfalfa and beans either. Light hunting pressure and near perfect deer habitat - mix of AG, large wood lots and nearby big woods, amount to what is easily 60 to 80 DPSM in the area. Plenty of former fields reverting to woods, provide good fawn cover. Far cry from what it was around there back in the 60s. We traveled several miles down the road towards town, back then to even see deer. Only real change in habitat, is fewer small farms and a few large ones, all of which grow lots of corn. My BIL would be upset to see that big ol' girl go down. He hasn't shot a doe up there yet, that weighed less than a 100lbs. Most have been been closer to 120.

Well done once again Brad. What you're doing is going to pay huge dividends down the road. My nephew and his wife are cultivating relationships with landowners that will pay dividends for their family long into the future. It will also help ensure that my dad's dream will continue. I told the one girl to spread some of my ashes in the field across from Denny's cabin, where they have killed several deer now. The view there down Paradise Valley is amazing and part of me wants to be there forever. Thank you Denny, you have no idea how much these girls appreciate the opportunity to hunt.

We have killed several at Camp Rip-And-Tear that exceeded 150. It is much more common than it used to be. I can remember when an average buck weighed about 110 and an average doe was 70 or so. All were skinny. Our deer today are rolling fat. This is a nice thing to see. Is that 150# dressed? We weigh every deer we kill. The heaviest doe we ever weighed was a long, fat doe killed by my SIL that was 129. Most does we've weighed have been 90 to about 105. The fawns have ranged from about 40-50 for the doe fawns and about 55-70 for button bucks. The bucks we have weighed have mostly been from about 110 -145(even lighter before ARs) there have been a few in the low 160s and the heaviest was a big 9 point I killed a few archery seasons ago that went 193 fd. Nearly of these deer come from about half ag crop land and mixed hardwoods with tons of red and white oaks. We have use two different scales over the years and we check them for accuracy with sacks of horse feed each year. The late Charles Alshiemer(sp?) said in a piece in D&DH that he has only seen one doe that hit the 160# mark , with most being much lighter.

I remember 15 years ago I took a buck to the butcher. His scales said 190. I had weighed it at camp, 165 on mine.
I put two 50 lb bags of rock salt on my scale, right on 100 lbs.

About 5 years ago my buddy caught a huge flounder weighing in @6lbs on tackle shops certified scales. Funny last year he was telling his catch story and that same flounder now is weighing in at 8 lbs! Of course a lil inflation must be factored in over 5 years!!😀

We have found the game commission's chest measuring tape to be fairly accurate. We used to have a spring scale in camp, but it somehow disappeared. Prior to that, we did check the results from the chest tape and found them to be close. I also used the chest tape when I did the field work with pregnant road killed does. For the record, we have taken several does that went above 150 pounds. I am not sure why that is surprising. We have the same subspecies of whitetails that Ohio and other midwestern states (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin) have. Odocoileus virginianus borealis, and with herd reduction, more deer are reaching their genetic potential. For more information, there is a lot on this page: www.whitetailsunlimited.com/i/p/bk_distribution.pdf

Back in the late eighties friend and I got a call from a taxidermist friend of his Asking if we want to see a legit 225 pound field dressed buck that had been brought into his shop. It was a heavily antlered 8 pt that may the biggest deer I have ever laid eyes on. It was killed with a slug near Corning New York.

Friday, Kate, the youngest one, missed a pretty nice 4 pt. Today her and I had a spike run past, couldn't stop him. Her mom saw a nice buck cruising past her.
Good stuff

I watched Kate in that blind for 6 hours. Her mother packed her lunch using zipper bags, she never opened a zipper bag. When I offered her some chips she put them in her mouth moisten them a little then began to chew. The crossbow was on the shooting sticks and on her thigh the entire time unless she was aiming at some inanimate Target for practice. She made very little movement inside the blind. I only realized later that she was trying to be as quiet and prepared as possible for the moment because she knew how quickly those moments come. She is 12 years old.

Their brother is in the Air Force, in Albuquerque. He drove back and wants to hunt with them and mom this weekend. Mom just wants another doe, so he and her will hunt a farm Thursday. I think we call a person like her a locavore? She's only to happy to help with doe control.
Her involvement and encouragement has been huge. I credit Denny and his neighbors with helping them all be successful. Uncle Brad is loving it!
