I've been testing loads in my nephew's wife's 243. Never seen such terrible groups in my life!
It would shoot something half decent, then the next load has a flyer 6 inches away.
We shot some loads again Saturday and the same thing. Shot factory and that one was ok. Our of frustration, I decided to just sight the factory load in. Made an elevation adjustment and it threw the bullet 6 inches low and 6 inches right!!!
Decided the scope was bad. Bought a new scope, because the one on it was a 50 year old Redfield.
Went to mount the new scope this morning only to find the screws, all 8 of them, weren't even close to tight!! In addition, the screws holding the base on wasn't tight. 😕
So, new scope, tight screws, maybe we can get a decent group or two? 🙂🙂

That's why you always check the screws first. Same thing just happened to me. Front base worked loose. It got red loc-tite because they're proprietary bases and they won't be getting changed.

In all my years, never had it happened, so never gave it a thought.
We shall see now if this gun choots, once the heat is over

I always used blue loctite when mounting bases. Never had one work loose even with heavy recoilers..….300 Win Mags, 12 ga 3.5” etc. Never use loctite on rings.

I have tubes of blue loc-tite all over the place. But like I said, I can't change mounts on this rifle if I wanted to. Only Burris makes mounts for it. So since it ain't going anywhere it got the Red

I didn't use Loctite today, maybe I should have. Maybe it makes sense before I waste more ammo sighting in.

Some base screws out of the box have some packing oil on threads which I take lighter fluid to clean off before applying a light coating of locktite. The rings tend to have some tension when firming-up similar to a lock washer concept which prevent loosening from recoil vibration reason why normally no locktite needed.

Always thought you might have a screw or two loose, Dutch. Interesting post. Brought up memories of a similar experience. On a hunt in British Columbia in 2001, I had a similar problem. When we went to a range to check zeros, my first shot hit nearly two feet to the right, actually hit the target next to the one I was aiming at. Whe we looked at the scope, the screws were loose. It took a bit of work to get the outfit tightened and then bore sighted. Since then I always check such things. The hunt ended up being a good one with lots of bears sighted. I took one whose skull measued less than a half inch below 20 inches.

I've ruled out Loctite. I want something that's not quite as difficult to remove. We have never used that before. I'm just going to make sure they are very tight

I thought I saw it takes 500 degrees of heat to remove it?
Ok, I'll get the Blue at work tomorrow

The scope is removed before you would apply heat. The rings don't get loc-tite

The Red Stuff is for bolts or screws that hopefully never needs to be taken apart ever again. It can also be used to assemble something for someone you're mad at.😁
