This past weekend, I attended a two day auction at Redding's. I've been wanting a small wood lathe and was successful in bidding on one. As I stood there looking to the front a fellow asked what I was looking for. I told him there was a collet for sale and I wanted to bid on that. A lady turned around and said "You bought it!" I asked about the bench extension and the same lady said "You bought it!" I'm a little short in stature and I knew they were selling the lathe but couldn't see anything else they were including. Here I bought everything associated with an $850 brand new lathe for $165.00!!!
On Sunday, they sold C. David Redding's estate...the founder of Redding's Auction. They sold an original B. Hauck long rifle from York County for $17,100 and an original David Cooley from Adams County for $18,800. They also sold a few contemporary long rifles. A Robert Ditchburn long rifle brought $7,200; a Keith Casteel long rifle brought $8,800; a T. McCann swivel breech long rifle brought $2,150; a Larry Gardner long rifle brought $19,000 and an unsigned, Brad Emig, Yorktown long rifle #002, sold for the bargain price of $1,000! (Brad, of Cabin Creek Muzzleloaders, didn't sign his early rifles)

Nice, what brand was the lathe? I just picked up a new mini lathe from Rockler but haven't used it yet. Not even sure what I'm going to make, just always wanted one and it was on sale lol.

Well, you sound just like me. I just want to putz around with it. I have a few small projects in mind to make with the scrap curly maple and walnut lumber I have laying around. I'm not going to be making furniture or anything like that.
The lathe is a TurnCraft made by Penn State Industries and lists for $489.95. It's a ten inch, variable speed. I wasn't really interested in the bench extension but it was included and it retails for $160.00. The collet is a 1" and can replace the headstock. It uses a key to expand the jaws and retails for $162.00. The last thing that was included was the lathe tools, also brand new, and they retail for $80.00 on sale. I just added that all up and I was a little low on my original total. That's $891.95, almost $900, of a brand new lathe. Talk about being tickled. Usually, after spending all day at the auction, the item I'm interested in is one of the last things sold and goes beyond my reach.

Congrats on the purchase. A neat tool to use.
I made my wood lathe when I worked as a millwright apprentice on night shift and weekends.
The design, (not a copy of a manufactured lathe), the welding, the bridgeport milling of slots and keyways, metal lathe turning of the head and tail shafts and running threads on each, drilling, tapping etc. were all part of my training.
That was over 50 years ago, and I used it yesterday and still find things to make on it.

Nice find Dan! Didn't realize Brad Emig didn't sign his early builds. I know back in 2007 he signed my PA Mountain Rifle with his John Hancock along with his cross.
