Keep the videos coming, cspot. Glad to see you keep some of the eating size ones. Do you catch them on the cut carp you showed in an early video?

It was probably 50/50 on what which bait. Wish I would have some fresh shad. The ones we kept were full of shad.

Cut fresh shad was my favorite bait by far when catfishing Lower Susquehanna below Conowingo Power plant. I would buy at local fish market but learned by talking to a MD DNR Marine Police that you couldn't have American Shad in your possession(No Open Season) as they are protected(in MD). I asked how about if store bought & you had sales receipt...he said you would still get a citation.(picky, picky lol) That's when I started using cut bunker which was ok but not as good as shad. In PA you're ok as we have an a shad season open all year round. OH would be ok as they're not listed as a regulated fish species.

THey are a little soft though and can get pulled off the hook. I am still not the best at getting them with a castnet. In Ohio you can only use a 10' diameter cast net, so as deep as they are in the water column right now they are tough to get. Probably my favorite bait is skipjack, but you pretty much have to buy it. I have caught a few in the Ohio river down by our camp but they aren't that prevalent this far north. The Ohio is the only place to get them. I use cut bluegill alot as they are easy to get. I catch them out at some strip mine ponds not far from the house. They aren't as oily of a fish as shad, carp, or skipjack.

The American Shad run on the Lower Susqqehanna was unbelievable!! On an average weekend in/around Port Deposit all the way down to the Cheasapeake Flats there would be virtually hundreds of boats trolling for shad. Spring spawning run originates in Atlantic migrating up Cheasapeake into tributaries. Best time was most of May up to Memorial Day. Average American Shad ran anywhere from 3-6 lbs & 24". Tremendous acrobatic fighter almost like a lil yellowfin tuna!! Outstanding baked if you could handle raking meat off the bones!
CS.....I guess the shad you get are a freshwater species(gizzard)??

Yep. Gizzard or threadfin. Prefer Gizzard as threadfin are really tough to keep on the hook. Usually with threadfin they are so small I will put 4-6 on the hook at a time.
