I hit the range this morning with a Savage 99 takedown and a Marlin Guide Gun. I had my handloads in 300 Savage and 45-70. The .300 really didn't like the load which consisted of Winchester 748 powder and 150 grain Hornady Spitzers. I'm going to load some more up this evening. I think I'll try IMR3031 powder and 150 grain Sierra flat nose and see how that does. It has a little bit of barrel wobble like the old takedowns often do bur it shoots well with Federal 150 factory loads. So it's just a matter of finding the right load. But it was good to be out flinging bullets anyways

Great day to get out Mike!! Always refreshing flinging some round downrange!! Sure wish I woulda hung on to my Granpaps Model 99 300 Savage! Really...the ideal PA deer round!!
My Sister/BIL were up at my camp today & all looks good. She said quite a few camps were occupied. They ate dinner at Forksville Inn & a good crowd was there.

Thanks with minimal advertising up there our "word of mouth" really helpful. Over the years just talking to some locals re who they use is really helpful when you're in a pinch(warm conditions etc) and need local processing.

Well the Savage 99 prefers 180's. So I'm going to have to take my handloads in that direction

I shot my nephew's wife's Savage Axis 243 last Sunday. One load shot pretty well. I'll load a few more. Going to change primers tho.
It did feel good to shoot. Pretty impressed with the gun, for $350. The new trigger springs made that trigger very sweet

Well the Savage 99 prefers 180's. So I'm going to have to take my handloads in that direction Both my Granpaps used Kmart bought $8/box 150 grain Rem Core Lokts in their 300 Sav 99's and did well on deer. If here...they would give me a hard time for sure re the premium stuff I buy!! lol

I've shot everything I've ever shot with Core-Lokt's, Powershoks, Power-Points, Silvertips, Interlocks, Pro-Hunters, and Ballistic Tips. All cup and cores and nothing premium.

Yeah....a lot of the premium bullet hype is mostly psychological when in substance which really doesn't mean anything in "most cases". Now if we could only change "Most Cases" to "All Cases"!!

John Barsness the gun writer says that if your muzzle velocity is below 3,000 fps you don't need premium bullets. Everything I shoot starts out below 3,000

I have put trail cams over one dead deer, and 2 bait piles of rib cages. Two of the three were in the woods, one was on a larhe log landing. In all three cases, eagles showed up. I switched to solid copper bullets partly due to this information.
They kill deer, without the lead poisoning issues.

I went to the Barnes 50 caliber(.451 bullet) solid copper Grain Spit-Fire TEZ FB's. No complaints!! Accurate & deadly in my TC ProHunter in-line Probably should consider cf copper offerings.

They'll have to legislate me out of my cup and core bullets I made a choice that feels right to me. I'm not knocking your choice. But I'm very old school. I like to do things the way they were done 100 years ago when it comes to a lot of my gun stuff

I like to do things the way they were done 100 years ago when it comes to a lot of my gun stuff I know you weren't knocking me. For as many animals as we shoot, a switch can be beneficial. Target plinking would be different
