2013 Youth Fishing Seminar Series
MSSA Youth Angler Club Adds New Program
(ANNAPOLIS, MD) – When it comes to protecting recreational and sportfishing anglers, the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association (MSSA) has been at work successfully for over 30 years. With 14 chapters throughout the state and one in Pennsylvania, the MSSA is the largest and most diverse fishing organization in the state.
Over the last few years the MSSA has made an effort to increase youth participation in fishing through its numerous chapter events focused on youth and family. Nearly every chapter within the MSSA hosts at least one event geared at getting kids interested in fishing. This year, the MSSA and its MSSA Youth Angler Club will introduce Maryland to something it has never seen before, the 2013 Youth Fishing Seminar Series.
“A critical part of protecting Sportfishing for the future is recruiting and retaining youth anglers. We do that by getting them involved and interested at a young age. The MSSA Youth Angler Club is designed to do just that,” said Dave Smith Executive Director of the MSSA.
The Seminar Series will consist of 8 events teaching the basics of fishing along with several weekend field trips. The Series will begin in April and end in November. Each month there will be an industry leader and/or professional angler speaking about a particular aspect of fishing.
The speaking events will take place at Alltackle located at 2062 Somerville Road in Annapolis. Each speaking event will include pizza and beverages for the kids and parents courtesy of Alltackle.
“Teaching kids how to fish is a very rewarding aspect of our business here at Alltackle.com. Not only is fishing a great family pastime, it is also a skill that these kids can take with them throughout life and pass down to future generations. We are proud to sponsor the MSSA Youth Seminar Series as well as the Youth Divisions for 2013 MSSA Tournament Series”, said Keith Fraser, owner of Alltackle.com.
The Seminar Series is sponsored by local fishing industry leaders such as Alltackle.com, Judge Yachts, Captain Walleye Pete, Captain Randy Dean, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Captain Luke Thatcher, USCG, and the MSSA Youth Angler Club.
Two of the weekend field trips are sponsored by Luke Thatcher, Captain of the Miss Chesapeake Beach and Bill Judge of Judge Yachts. Captain Luke will be taking 30 kids and 30 parents fishing in July for some summer fun. Bill Judge will give MSSA Youth Angler Club members a rare glimpse inside the Judge Yachts facility. Here Bill Judge will show the kids how he builds some of the finest custom sportfishing boats in the Mid-Atlantic.
The Seminar Series is part of the MSSA Youth Fishing Club which includes the numerous chapter events as well as the Youth Angler of the Year contest (YAY). The YAY contest is in its second year and will once again kick off on April 21, 2013. The contest was a huge success last year with over 50 contestants and more than 900 entries. Youth anglers are encouraged to get out on the water and go fishing. Anglers are awarded points for catching fish, participating in seminars, catching records, and more. The contest ends December 15th and the winners will be recognized during the MSSA Spring Tournament Awards Ceremony the following year.
“If we can do anything this year, I hope the MSSA is successful in introducing fishing to as many kids as possible”, said Vince Ringgold, President of the MSSA.
