No surprise. The PGC has ZERO control over the captive deer population. That's the Pa. Dept of AG.
Why? Likely the captive deer lobby puts more $$$ into campaign coffers and they like it to remain the same.

DMA 7 Captive FaciltyDMA 7 DMA 7 was established in 2022 after CWD was detected in a captive facility in Lycoming County. The Game Commission implemented DMA-wide restrictions and enhanced CWD surveillance in the area. The boundaries of DMAs can change year to year, based on the location of CWD-infected animals discovered through testing. storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ddfce74f89d24a91b116a84ddf126ac6see; pagame.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=084308c67d524d14ad90dcb2232b0c01***> 1/5/2022 4.5 Y Female PA Lycoming WTD Shooter No No 177 Quarantine CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE CASES CWD STATUS OF CAPTIVE HERDS AS OF February 2022 2/23/2022 4.5 Y Male PA Lancaster WTD Shooter No No 93 Quarantine 1/5/2022 4.5 Y Female PA Lycoming WTD Shooter No No 177 Quarantine 10/14/2021 11.5 Y Female PA Fulton WTD Hobby No No 1 Quarantine 10/14/2021 2.5 Y Male PA Bedford WTD Breeder No No 70 Quarantine 10/12/2021 4.5 Y Female PA Indiana Red Deer Shooter No No 14 Quarantine 10/5/2021 1.5 Y Male PA Bedford WTD Shooter No No 50 Quarantine 9/27/2021 Y Male WI Vilas WTD Shooter No No Quarantine 9/27/2021 4.5 Y Male PA Huntingdon WTD Breeder No No 137 Quarantine 9/21/2021 1 Y Male PA Blair WTD Breeder No No 26 Quarantine 9/9/2021 3.5 Y Male PA Bedford WTD Breeder No No 36 Quarantine 8/26/2021 4 Y Male PA Bedford WTD Shooter No No >200 Quarantine 5/28/2021 9 Y Female PA Bedford WTD Breeder No No 29 Quarantine 5/12/2021 2.5 Y Male PA Warren WTD Shooter No No 19 Depopulated 4/20/2021 Six positives PA Bedford WTD Breeder Traceback No No 87 Depopulated 3/29/2021 4 Y Female PA Blair WTD Breeder No NA 11 Quarantine 3/19/2021 3.75 Y Male PA Bedford WTD Hobby No NA 8 Quarantine 2/8/2021 3.5 Y Male PA Blair WTD Shooter No NA 19 Quarantine 12/30/2020 Ukn Y Female PA Bedford WTD Shooter No NA 51 Quarantine 12/15/2020 2.5 Y Female PA Fulton WTD Hobby No NA 19 Quarantine 10/29/2020 2 Y Male PA Somerset WTD Shooter No No 0 Depopulated snip...see full text; www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_health/animal_diseases/cwd/downloads/status-of-captive-herds.pdfwww.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/cervid/cervids-cwd/cervids-voluntary-hcpkind regards, terry

CWD DMA’s have never gotten smaller since they began tracking it. Never.

CWD DMA’s have never gotten smaller since they began tracking it. Never. Due to the deer farm issues, they never will. Eventually the entire state will be a DMA

I noted in the CWD Status posted above by Flounder that the cases are noted as Breeder, Shooter or Hobby. What's a Hobby? Is that just someone that has a permit to keep a deer penned up in the backyard?

The nearest deer farm near my hunting area is the one just outside Barbours bordering Rt 87 just before the Lycoming/Sullivan County line: Red Ridge Whitetails

So how many positives in captive herds compared to the wild herd? I would think the numbers in the wild herds would be much larger than actual reported cases.

They take the time to publish the positive results in captive herds so you would think they have a list of where deer are testing positive in the wild.

The PGC HAS/had an interactive map that showed the location of deer that tested positive. I’ll see if I can find it again.

Well…here’s the link to the current map. pagame.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=084308c67d524d14ad90dcb2232b0c01The old interactive map showed the location of each positive test by year for like the last 5 years. I guess it’s getting to form into a big blob…so why bother? Also, now they are distinguishing a DMA from an EA. The EA is an “established” area….meaning it either is, or will soon become overrun with CWD. The DMA is saying “we still got a chance”.

Thank ya Dave and George. I've never seen those maps and that could explain why the whitetail herds have diminished in our area. My property is located in Monroe Township, Bedford County with the most free ranging CWD positive reports.

Man....does that map suck. How about printing the names of the townships etc in the little sub-maps on there? How hard would that be?

When the day comes that I have concerns that a deer I harvest has CWD or am required or feel necessary to test is the day I make my final allocation of deer hunting days to fishing days. Last 5 years or so I've been moving in that direction anyways....irregardless of CWD concerns. The future of deer hunting looks pretty damn bleak.

I'm considering buying a new crossbow.....then when I look at "big picture" stuff, I have to ask myself why. Hunting in the fall\winter can still be done via hunting coyotes and\or fox. There's always fall turkey and spring turkey, plus groundhogs. I can "sprinkle in" hunting in between fishing. Today it's cool (well...the Mrs says cold....but...) and raining. So, fly tying is on the menu!!

Good way to spend the day Dave. Up in Sullivan County they're calling for 4-7 inches snow tonight. With Opening Day only 11 days away.....likely go Spring Gobbler a lil later in season as I ain't gonna shovel snow to access my blind whether they're gobbling or not!! LOL Yeah...if this CWD causes deer hunting to be a thing of the past I can keep busy enuff with turkey, squirrel, yotes & bear if my fishing schedule allows!!
