Last week I had a moment of weakness and bought another handgun. This one is a Rock Island Arms XT 22 magnum built on the 1911 platform. I was all excited about it, and took it along to camp to shoot last week. That turned into a nightmare. It wouldn't cycle properly. In addition, about half the time the rounds wouldn't go off and I had to cock the hammer and it would go off the second try. I got in touch with the folks at Rock Island and had a nice conversation with one of their experts who gave me some things to try. I was using Winchester .22 mag 40 grain loads. Supposed to be what the gun likes. I have a 1911 in .45ACP and love shooting it. Thought this one in .22 mag would be the cat's meow. So far it is not.

I hate when that happens. Did they suggest using Hornady 30gr ammo? I use that in my 22mag Win 9422 and it’s very accurate.

Almost every new gun I buy lately needs to go back. I bought a Heritage Rough Rider .22 a couple months ago and it keyholed every round whether I had the 22 lr or 22 mag cylinder in. They rebarreled it and it is fine now and they got it back to me in a week and a half! Also I bought a Stoeger 12 gauge SxS last year and it was a single trigger model. When I'd pull the trigger both barrels would fire simultaneously. I sent that back and they had it for three months and when I got it back they didn't fix it. They wrote on the slip OPERATOR ERROR! Several years ago I bought a new Marlin 30-30 and noticed the barrel was screwed into the receiver at an angle. It went back and they had it for 8 weeks. They finally had to send me a different gun. Never enough time to do it right the first time but always time to redo it!

No. They suggested using a 40 grain load that leaves the muzzle at over 1900 fps. Another thing they told me was that I should run several hundred rounds through the gun before establishing that there is a problem. What the heck. I will enjoy doing that. I have already disassembled the gun and given it a good lube job and cleaning. Have lots of ammo, including rounds from 30 to 50 grain bullets. Most handguns do not require a breakin period to function, so I am not pleased with this one so far. The 30 grain rounds are super accurate out of my Marlin .22 mag rifle. So are the 40 grainers.

Friend of mine had the same issue with a Ruger 9MM directly out of the box. Would jam usually before getting a clip through. It was disappointing to say the least. He also bought box of off-brand ammo. My 2 suggestions to him were: 1 Clean it thoroughly as they use grease initially. 2. Buy some reputable ammo, then give it another go. Not sure how it turned out.
I'm convinced after shooting so many brands of semi-handguns, and seeing so many jams, that a revolver is the way to go for home or self defense. Who the hell wants a jam in a life or death situation ?

A few years back I bought a Kimber Micro9. Gun has worked flawlessly with Remington factory and my handloads.

They've always had problems with the 22 WMR in a semi auto platform. It's too hot for a simple blowback action but not enough for gas operation.

You cannot beat this stuff. My new semi shotgun last year wasn't ejecting empties, gave it a shot with this and that was it. A friend had them same problem, same results. My brother had a tight semi pistol, same result. Great stuff Hornady 9990 One Shot Gun Cleaner with DynaGlide Plus (5 oz) www.amazon.com/dp/B000LC9YM2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_4TZPMB7YMS2WCVAG67N0

Sometimes on those lighter recoiling semis it takes a number of cyclings till the action breaks-in. My Browning Hi-Power 9MM took several hundred rounds until all the hiccups worked themselves out where it now can handle anything I feed it. That with lube Dutch mentioned may be all that's needed.

Seems RIA addressed this issue in it's design of the XT22 Mag(see link below). Hopefully, you new gun works this issue out after break-in, lube etc. Have fun! Guns & Ammo RIA XT22

Problem seems to be solved. I managed to find some Armscor 22 mag ammo, and it works fairly well. I suspect that after a break in period this handgun will do just fine.

The Armscor .22 Mag ammo that works is 40 grain. I tried some 30 grain loads made by CCI and they worked fairly well, but the Armscor worked best so far. Armscor is using Covid 19 as an excuse for why it is not available. I did an internet search and found 150 rounds.
