My only shotgun is a Parker Bros SxS made in 1925. I'm acutely aware of the fact that I could stand to have a pump or auto with 3" capability and I'm thinking about getting one. I'm pretty sure I want to keep it under $500 so as to maybe survive the wrath of my Wife. Any guns I should be seriously taking a look at? Oh and it has to be 12 gauge

I know it's a bit over your price range, but last year when I was at bear camp, on the Sunday we shot some clay's. A fellow had one of these Beretta's and I tell ya....I was hitting 90% of what was tossed up. IMHO one worthy of considering. Beretta a300

Shotguns are all about fit.You need to shoulder one to get an idea and you need to shoot it to be sure. It's too bad you can't test drive them before buying. You're always rolling the dice when you buy one.

True. Fit is everything. I just wanted to see if anybody could point me toward something I hadn't considered

The heck with the new ones. You need an old Ithaca model 37 featherlite. You can even slam fire it if your feeling frisky.

I would go to a shop and take a win,rem 870 and weatherby side by side and just keep shouldering them.I had a punch of pumps over the years and I always game back to the winchesters. They just fit me and I shot them well. The rem 870 in a great shotgun but just didn't feel like winchesters. My favorite pump of all time was a win 1300 upland with a strait stock.

In retrospect....I paid $1,200 for my Browning Gold Stalker semi about 10-12 years ago but now after owning a CZ 712 could of saved $700 by going with the $500 CZ 712 which is comparable in overall function, shouldering etc other than the Browning can handle 3.5" shells. Of course,,,,,,the CZ 712 doesn't have a purdy gold plated trigger/engravings as my Browning does!! Live & learn as they say!!

Still in good shape & works like a charm!! I own 3 of them. A 1939 12 guage, 1945 12 with Deerslayer barrel on it, and a 1970 20 guage. I've been trying to get my hands on a 16. They are getting top dollar for old 16's.

As posted.....an 870 may be the way to go if it's a toss-up between a semi & pump? I do know that a gas operated semi would soften a 3" recoil much better.

I'm leaning semi auto. I may go check some out firsthand tomorrow if I don't end up deer hunting

Stoeger makes a decent inertia operated semi that isn't over priced. The CZ's are nice as well.I never shot their semi but I've owned others and the quality was decent.

Get an over/under. LOL. Actually I prefer them for the ease of cleaning and simplicity.

I've had a Beretta A300 auto for several years. Shoot trap with it now and then, works fine. Shot a round of clays once or twice. Mine is the synthetic stock version, because the walnut ones were about $100 more when I got mine. Made in the USA. Came with several choke tubes, got an extended "Turkey" choke for it also.
For most small game hunting, I still use my 1930s vintage Crescent 20ga sxs. It's what I like to tote.
Lots of autos made in Turkey and other places, on the market. Some ok, some not so much from what I've seen? OTOH, 870s are still fairly inexpensive and good to go?

I don't own a CZ, but have shot one of their over and under and autos. I loved the feel of them both. That CZ may be one you want to give some serious consideration to.

I currently own 4 CZ's....(1) 550FS 6.5CM, (2) 452 22LR(bolt rifle), (3) 97B 45ACP & last purchase (4) 712 12ga semi. 100% satisfied with their performance & then some. I know if I didn't already have a Browning High Power 9MM....a full size CZ75 would also be in my CZ line-up!!

Nicest shotgun I've ever shouldered, was a Rem. 1100 "straight grip" stocked one, years ago at a local gun shop. Too expensive, but I would've liked to have had one. I've yet to ever see a used one for sale.
My old huntin' bud had two M1100LTs. One 12ga and a 20ga. Hunted with that 20ga several times and it was a joy to carry and shoot.

I bought a TriStar semi last spring in 20 guage. Three inch chamber. Nice lightweight gun. I believe it's made in the same factory as the CZ. Loggys shotgun looks like a twin to mine. Very nice gun
