A very good friend of mine passed away this year. He was an avid out west elk hunter and had taken more elk than I can count. Before he passed he gave me a set of Bugler's from one of his elk. So, I've decided to have these set in a Bezel (I'll take to a jeweler) and then I plan on inlaying them into my .54 Caliber Lehman reproduction. I know the purest out there would say that was never done in the mid-1800's....but I say how do they know? Plus it's my rifle and if I wanna do it I just will!! I took a jewelry saw and "cut" the elk tooth root off and semi-rounded the set. I figured it was easier for me to do this than to explain to the jeweler what I wanted. Anyway...here's the tooth surgery I did. (I should'a been a CPA\Dentist!!) Who knew!

I think that's a good way to honor and remember your friend, Dave. Go for it!
Oh, and as far as becoming a dentist, I'm sure there's an ICS (International Correspondence School) course out there somewhere.

(rofl)Or you could just sell me that 6.5 Mannlicher and then your choices would be much less.

Only have one gun with a personal inlay. Had Brad Emig inlay my initials in silver when he built my 54 caliber PA Mountain Rifle(below). Silver sets off nice on a curly maple stock. Probably a silver or brass bezel would look nice with the ivories?
