So for you real gurus here, with black powder now potentially becoming harder to get your hands on, what would be the best alternative for a flintlock? I have a TC Firestorm. I know black powder always more reliably in a flintlock, but is there a substitute with goo ignition reliability in flintlocks?

I've never seen the BP substitutes work well in a flinter....unless you drop a pinch of regular BP down the barrel first.

Agree with Dave which applies to virtually all traditional flintlocks.
Although, your TC Firestorm has a removable breech plug that is specifically designed with a "Pyrodex Pyramid" to direct the ignition fire 360 degrees around the base of a bp substitute pellet. I know some who successfully shoot the Pyrodex pellets in their Firestorms getting reliable ignition. You would still need a bp primer charge but a can of 4fg would last you many years. The very first manufactured Firestorms did not have the Pyrodex Pyramid design breech plug but my understanding it's was standard on all later models. I would call TC and get some input.

Could be we will be relegated to making our own BP? I've seen this done on Youtube and it all looks like a PITA to me.

Bought 5lbs of 2f on Friday. Should be good for awhile. The place still had plenty in stock. Pricey though. 29/lb. I like my Goex.

I've only ever used BP in my flintlocks. However,I have a friend who's fairly serious about flintlocks and he swears on Jim Shocky's gold.

I think it's American pioneer powder but not 100% sure.

Heck I use blackpowder in my Inlines. I've never fooled with substitutes. I even reload cartridges with black Yer just blowin smoke with loading BP in cartridges!! No.....really.....that's a lot of smoke when you pull the trigger!! Gun rag writer Mike Venturion (sp) loads his 45-70 (among others) with nothing but BP. He shoots completion with that load. I use BlackHorn 209 powder in my in-line. Great accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleanup. Blackhorn 209 also provides cartridge load data for many straight wall cartridges.
