Whuts you favorite black powder?? I smoked Goex for many years until a friend gave me a puff of Swiss. I've been hooked on Swiss for about 5 years now. It almost like shooting smokeless...so clean plus very uniform in granulation. It's also is a lil hotter in that you can reduce your loads by 10% and get the same fps. Swiss Sporting Black PowderManufactured in Switzerland by Poudrerie d'Aubonne overlooking Lake Geneva. Swiss black powder is made in the same atmosphere of makers of fine wine or cheeses, it is an art. Everything is exact and quality is the primary goal. Aged Buckthorn Alder wood is distilled on the facility ensuring total control of the charcoal making process. Black powder is manufactured in small batches to produce the highest quality black powder in the world. . Granulation Sizes: 1Fax - 8.0 to 4.75 mm 2Fax - 4.75 to 1.7 mm 3Fax - 2.0 to 1.18 mm 4Fax - 1.7 to 0.85 mm 5Fax - 0.85 to 0.3 mm 6Fax - 0.6 to 0.3 mm 7Fax - 0.42 to 0.15 mm Meal-D - 0.42 mm

All I've ever used is Goex. I like waiting for the smoke to clear to learn I missed.

Dutch...when the Swiss smoke clears you will find that you didn't miss!! ;D A lot of my friends also burn Swiss in their inlines with good results. I shoot it in my custom White Super 91 .504 & found it best for throwin those 495 grain .503 trashcans!! ;D

To be honest, I've never missed a deer with a flinter. Had them not go off, but never missed, but then, I take close shots, 50 yds or less.

I killed many more than I missed Dutch. ;D Like you...try to keep shots inside the 50 but I did kill one with a 1-28 fast twistin bbled RMC AccuSporter flintlock couple years ago @105 yds throwin a saboted bullet. Ain't the norm though for sure.

I have used Goex with good results for many years. My now departed shooting and hunting buddy always referred to it as "Gooex". Still have a lifetime supply of 3F that I shoot in my 50 cal but down to last can of 2F for the 54 and 60 cal flinters.
Might just try a can of Swiss 2F, old Loggy's never steered me wrong yet! I can buy it locally but think it's close to 40 bucks a pound.

Tomcat, what load and ball are you using with the 3F?
I have threatened for years to just go with 3F for the barrel and the pan, but have not done it.

Dutch - I shoot a .495 roundball w/.018 pillow ticking patch over 70 gr Goex 3F out of my 50 cal. Most accurate load out of that rifle and accounted for many deer over the years.
If you want to try some 3F just reduce your 2F load by about 10 gr. I have used 3F in the pan and can tell no difference from 4F as long as you have good spark. In fact I prefer 3F in the pan when the air is damp, doesn't seem to goo up as much.

Amen Tom regarding that 3f in the pan. I have some swiss 3fg which is way too hot for my 54 cal so its outstanding for the pan. I was burning patches using the 3f Swiss in bbl in my 54.. Goex 3fg was ok. I'm with Swiss 2f for load though. I think in comparison its almost like a 2.5 granulation compared to goex.
4f in pan is good on those cold crisp days with low humidy which seem few & far between each year.

It'll be a cold day ...... somewhere ....., before ole Berks drops $30. for a pound of black powder! Besides, the 15 pounds of fffG Goex, still tucked away in the garage will most likely see me out of here, and I use it in everything from my .36 cal. squirrel whacker to my 24 gauge fowler! I just don't shoot as much anymore, and it seems every critter I settle the sights on, tends to move at the last minute anyway.

I'm like you my shooting has been less. Too many overlapping fishing seasons so if i burn 2 lbs a year...thats about it. One thing ...you can cut 10% off load & get the same results as Goez. Plus...likely save a few hundred cleaning patches a year! lol A friend of mine who shot competetion at Friendship turned me on to the Swiss.

Maybe a can of Swiss will find its way to my stocking this Christmas. And, by the way, frugal flintlockers should wash their used patches, but I don't either.

You shouldn't leave a ball and patch in for over the off season but I do it all the time even if I shot it once. Doesn't seem to effect it at all

Well, we know who one of the most frugal ones is. Used to shoot nothing but Dupont, now only use Goex ffg.
