Yup. Drove an hour for a box of 38-40 that contained 10 rounds loaded and the rest empty brass. The stuff is simply unobtainium. It's a hundred bucks a box on Gunbroker. And yes you can get dies but try finding bullets. Not many .401 bullets to choose from. It ain't like 44-40 where you can walk right into a gun shop and buy a box.

All the .401 bullets you care to order. moyerscastbullets.com/handgun.htmlI've purchased many lead bullets for my 38-55's and also .308 caliber for my 30-30 "plinking" loads. The guy makes good stuff.

Winchester (Olin) ammo used to make 38-40 and other kinda not so popular loads, once a year. That's why they call that stuff seasonably available.
Last I bought any, ran around $38 for a box of WW 50 count, 180gr WW soft points in the gray box. Got two boxes of older stuff (white box/orange and black printing) from a local guy before that, for far less. But that was probably 15 years ago?
Sold my old M92 Winchester last summer, but still have a Colt SAA clone in that chambering.

What'd you get for that 1892? We got ours for $500 because it needs new wood. I just bought an original stock set for it for $300.

Mine was made in 1903, in mint condition. Auctioneer rated it at 95% perfect. Said it was the nicest M92 he'd ever seen come in. Got over two grand for it.

This one is a 1903 as well. It'll be about 75% condition once I get the original wood on it.

Granddad had the Marlin 38-40. He'd take it out on occasion for deer and even for bear season.

Used to get Bonitz/Jerry's Sports Center flyers from a bud that had an FFL. Depending on time of year, there'd be a list of ammo like 38-40, 44-40 and many others, listed as seasonally available. Meaning the manufacturer, Winchester I think, made a limited run of that ammo and when t was gone, no more in the pipeline until the next time they made it.
My impression was that it was made once per year.
Black Hills probably makes their cowboy ammo more frequently? Went to watch a cowboy action shoot once. Everything used in rifles/pistols, must be low velocity lead bullet loads.

That stuff is 800 fps. In a cartridge that can drive that bullet 1,800 fps. It's a true cat sneeze load.
