There are ways to get kids out there with guns that do reduce recoil. Would I send a kid out with a 12 guage 3.5 mag? No. But you can send them out with a gun they can handle, even if it means using a 20 gage, and maybe getting the bird closer. The WORST thing I ever did to my daughter was to take her to a Women in the Outdoors thing where they only used 12 guages on a trap range. She came away crying and has been afraid of recoil since! Her instructor pretty much forced her to keep shooting, until I stepped in. Now, if she could use a semi rifle for deer, I'd feel better, and she would too. Yep. I agree.

No reason to use a semi rifle for deer. They've been making .222's and .223's since long before I was born. Now I'd still be all in favor of semi legalization.

I went back and read my original statement. I have no reason to edit it. It's common sense that if a kid cant handle the recoil of a minimum firearm, they should be held back from taking part in the hunt at that level until they can. I feel even better saying it the second time.
Not when it is common sense that there are weapon choices out there that can minimize/eliminate the recoil and get them in the game. Why the ammo options not be part of the minimum firearm I'm referring to? I think you just wanted to argue because it made you feel better.

A 410 is inadequate unless you load tss loads.Get them a tristar semi in a 20ga.It's a light,gas-operated semi that shoots very soft and you can pick one up for under $400.I bought one for my son and he killed several birds, starting at 8 years old with 3" federal heavyweights. It was worthless for trap as it shot about 6" to the left at 20 yards but a set of true glo sights fixed that for turkey season.Have them practice with light loads and just stick a 3" mag in when it's time to hunt. They won't even feel it.When it comes to kids, lightweight guns are a must.By the toime they're 9 or 10,you want to get them away from shooting sticks because they'll lose opportunities if they depend on them.A light gun is a must.

Ammo options are something to consider as well. If you look back Stroupy was simply asking for suggestions on a single shot .410. I just cautioned him to watch the recoil as some of those guns have a high felt recoil. You then basically made a post that a kid should wait if they can't handle the recoil. That sure seemed like you were trolling, and seemed to imply that kids that young shouldn't be hunting? Can't say for sure that was your intent, but I would think that you surely know that you can hunt any game in this state with a weapon with little to no recoil so what you said isn't even a factor. Seems you were the one wanting to stir it up by your original post. You even reviewed your post later and said you stood by it. You even felt better saying it a second time. Not sure why.

Those Truglo sights can be pretty nice. I will say that the TSS in 2 3/4" works well too. The one year that was all we could get as the 3" was sold out.

If you hand load tss in a 410,it's no joke.My BIL made a turkey specific gun with a 410 and tss loads. It'll drop one at 40 yards easily but I'd never use lead shot.

Federal has a turkey load for the 410 wasvgoing to use that. Guy I work with has a stevens single shot 20 I might buy off him. He has 2 girls, and they had no issues with it.

I've always thought it's a shame the 28 gauge wasn't more popular.

Hank Jr. (Yes that Hank) has on facebook a picture of his grandson on with the turkey he shot with his 410 single shot. Must be good enough.

No doubt the .410 is capable of killing one. In my opinion the 20 gauge is a better choice and has more versatility down the road. Of course Dutch said that you are loaded, so you can probably buy one of each gauge for her.
