What rem700 uses. A 150 gr. PSP Remington Core-Lokt in '06's and 300 Savage. Bought 1000 of them a couple of decades age and they're still my go to deer bullet. Never fails... As they say "Deadliest Mushroom In The Forest". Muab

Hard to say. I've used everything from 110 to 220. I guess the 220 Core-Lokt would be my favorite if push came to shove.

It depends upon what I am hunting, and which .30 caliber firearm I'm using. Deer: 150 grain Sierra game king. Bear: 180 grain Nosler Partition Elk, moose, African plains game: 200 grain premium bullet such as trophy bonded, Swift A-frame, or Kodiak bonded core.

Well, I mostly use a Marlin 336A, vintage 1950's. It's not in the ballistic class of a 308 or -06, but where I hunt, I don't need velocity. That said, I figure I might as well hit them with more lead, instead of worrying about a few more FPS out of a 30-30. LOL. So I se the standard 170 Gr. Core-Lokt that can be had at about $15/box, as opposed to the available 150 Gr. ?

Fleroo I am with you on those 170s in the 30-30. Nothing has ever shot better than a 170 out of our Marlins!

When I was hunting deer with an ought six, was loading up Speer 150gr Hot Cors. Loaded lots of them for my farm boy cousin over the years and he did well with them. Then my buddy began gifting him two boxes of Rem. 150gr Core Lokts each fall and the varmint got hooked on them things. After my bud passed away, I was stuck staying with that program.
Last deer I killed using my old Speer load, was a big doe with my uncle's US Rem 1903 a few years ago. One and done. Folded her up on the spot, just like all the deer I'd killed with that load previously, in the M760 and my US Rem.
Last season Wally World had WW 150gr Power Points on sale at a much better price than the Core Lokts, so I broke the Core Lokts tradition. Cousin's son killed two deer with those Power Points and was happy with them.
Only other 30 cal. bullet I ever killed a deer with than the Speers, was a big buck in 1992. Tenant gave me part of a box of 165gr Btips, so I gave 'em a whirl. Dropped that buck like a bolt of lightning had hit it.

As they say "Deadliest Mushroom In The Forest". Muab I read an article on bullets that mushroom at any reasonable speed. I think the core-lokt mushroomed from 2900fps down to 1500fps. I'll dig out that Handloader article and check it out again. They had photos of about 15 different bullets they tested and the core-lokt was the only one that mushroomed at all reasonable speeds.

Dave, this one (150gr. Rem. PSP Core-Lokt) came out a a small whitetail, shot frontal in the chest, bullet went through the deer and was found lodged in the right hind quarter. Range was about 20 yds. Velocity was about 2550 fps at the muzzle. The deer ran about 20 yds., stood on it's hind feet and then dropped dead. I've heard that some years back the bean counters changed the Core-Lokts somewhat, making them less than what they were to save money, but I'm not sure if that's true. The bullets I'm using are dated back to the 90's and they do indeed work well. Most of the time they just go on through with a broadside shot.

John Barsness reports that the Core-Lokts were changed in the late 90's. He said they did away with the locking grooves but it didn't affect much as Power Points and Federal Blue Box never needed the locking grooves to perform. He said they also softened some Core-Lokts up at that time that were too hard like the .30 180 round nose.

The reason I am so fond of the 220 Core-Lokt is because it acts like a Partition. It will open up on a Groundhog but it will also drive through a Moose broadside. I've done both. You can just hunt anything with it.

I recovered the bullet from the last buck my dad ever killed. 170gr 8x57 Core Lokt.
Perfect mushroom, just like in the picture above. Dug it out of a half rotten log, beyond where dad's buck dropped, as the bullet passed right through the buck's boiler room. Doubt the tree had much to do with the mushroom, as the exit hole in the deer was the same diameter as the recovered bullet?
Pure stroke of luck to find the bullet. Dad and I were talking, waiting for his two brothers to work their way down to where we were with the buck. Looked beyond where the blood/hair spray was and noticed the snow had been knocked off that fallen tree. And there was the hole in the log, dug the bullet outta there. Still have it, nestled in the case it came from.
Along with dad's folded flag and the three empty ought six cases fired at his funeral from Garands, one of my favorite keepsakes.
