Hello, I am a newbie to this board eager to learn from colleagues who hunt with flintlocks. I bought my first flintlock about 15 years ago: it is a T/C Penna Hunter Carbine in 50 caliber. It is a sweet gun to carry and shoot, but I have always wanted a full rifle. Then recently, when visiting a local gun shop, I saw a T/C Renegade in 50 caliber on the used rack. The gun did not have a mark on it. It didn't look like the gun had been fired. It was on consignment from an estate. I thought the price was reasonable so it followed me home. When I took it to the range I was impressed with how it shot the 275 grain maxi hunters with 80 grains of FF. I look forward to other days at the range, but right now this one looks like a keeper. Anyone else shoot the renegade? Any pointers?

I have a renegade. I bought it the first year we had a muzzle loader season. It is dependable and accurate. I shoot nothing but round patched balls and have taken a number of deer with it. I also use 80 grains of 2F powder for my load.

I've had a T/C Hawken 45 caliber flintlock for years. When they introduced the Maxi Hunters, tried them out.
Haven't shot a patched round ball since. Mine loves the 255gr bullet. Haven't killed a deer with that bullet yet, but accuracy is great.

Thanks Muttleysback and Dennyf for your encouraging responses. I am looking forward to future trips to the range to get better acquainted with the Renegade and to carrying the rifle next deer season. I plan to shoot some patched round ball as well to see how they compare with the maxi hunters.

I've had a T\C Hawken that I built from a "kit gun" in 1980. That darn rifle never shot a consistent group to save it's soul. About ten years ago I bot a Green Mt. "drop in" 50 caliber barrel and now the rifle is one very accurate shooter.
Last year I built a Lehman in .54 caliber from parts obtained from TOTW. The T\C is still a great rifle....and it's killed a lot of deer. But my new .54 is very accurate as well and I took my first doe with it this year.
I love flintlock hunting. It's "the best" in the snow. Something we haven't had in a few years.

Thanks Davet, I have heard good things about those Green Mountain barrels. A friend of mine did exactly as you, he purchased a Green Mt. barrel that, according to him, transformed his Hawken.

Yup. If I missed a deer using my flinter's with a GM barrel....it's not the rifles fault!!

Yep...what Dave said. My boy has a TC Hawkins with a Green Mountain barrel... It is, to say the least, the mot accurate flinter in our family.

I had one and it was a good quality piece. It was a little heavy for my son so I sold it a couple months ago and bought him a lighter RMC.
