My son in laws Grand Father passed a few years ago and my son in law inherited an 8mm Mauser !
It is sporterized with the stock cut down and refinished and all the metal has a very good deep bluing done to it ! The really great thing about the rifle is his Grand Pap got it while fighting in Germany in WWII and brought it home with him ! I am looking for some brass to load for him to try to shoot it ?

I too have a 8mm Mauser from WWII. My Dad killed several deer with it when I was a kid.

Way back when I started hunting you could buy one for$15 or less. Even US Springfield .30-06 rifles were cheap then. No more. Most were good rifles, but needed some tweaking to get them shooting really well.

Last time Midway had no 8x57 brass, I got some from Widener's, but that was probably 15 years ago? Most of mine is R-P brass. It's not something I shoot a lot of, so won't ever need any more of it.
As mutt noted, back when I was a teen in the early to mid 1960s, several stores had supplies of milsurp rifles for cheap. Joe The Motorist's Friend and Miller's Auto Supply, for example. Every fall they had racks of old military rifles for little money. Mostly Mausers and 1903 variants. Sometimes British SMLEs, including a few Jungle Carbines.
I have several M98 Mausers and a pair of 1903 Remingtons. Some sporterized, some still in mostly original condition. All are great shooters and most have taken deer.
Biggest problem with most 8x57 factory ammo, is that it is loaded to fairly low velocities. You can approach 30-06 level performance, by handloading your own.

I had a Nazi and Turkish 8x57JS Mausers. If you find European factory ammo at a shop get you some. They load it better than Remington.
