I'm meeting a guy tomorrow to possibly buy this rifle. It's a 1928 model 14 in 35 call. My concern is the scope mounted on barrel. Never saw one off receiver. Should I be concerned?

Interesting mount. Well, for one that mount is likely screwed into the thickest part of the barrel. I would assume the barrel tapers like most hunting rifles. That said, it depends upon how deep the hole was drilled into the barrel. If the hole were say, half the thickness I would not be concerned. Plus, the screw goes into the barrel and "kind of" re-fills the drilled part.
If he has shot it a lot with factory ammo, I wouldn't be concerned. But take a good light so you can examine....as best you can the bore around that mount.

Open sights are drilled into barrels so what does a scope mount hurt? Other than value of course.

IDK. Just asking. If the gun is being used for target shooting or if many rounds are shot sighting it in, is there a possibility with barrel expansion/contraction on the front end and none of that on the backend (receiver) that scope accuracy might be compromised?

Thanks for the responses. I researched it a bit. This was the most common way to scope a model 14 and 141. The fact that its drilled takes $50 per hole off of value. This rifle is around 80% with a book value of 600.00. Guy is asking 450.00. I'm thinking price is good. I'll be getting my hands on it later today.

Unless there are some very tiny (or obviously large) cracks around the mount, I would not be afraid of the rifle. I would ask if I could remove the scope mount to examine the drilling.....maybe.

Well I bought the rifle. It's in great shape. The bore is spotless, action is smooth, and bluing is nice. Stock has a few Knicks. It's topped with a 3x9 red field and has weaver mounts. I'll be shooting 200 grain corelokt out of it. I wish it could talk. I'm sure it would have 90 years of stories to tell.
