Here where I am located there are still like ponds in fields where water has never laid before ! These are breeding areas for the mosquitoes and now there are some many of them here I can't even go into my yard ! By the time I walk to my car which is 25 feet from my door these things are buzzing around me ! Besides them there are some kind of little gnat type bug also and the stink bugs are showing up too ?
I took a ride to one of the ranges I belong to and went to my favorite bench to set up. In a few minutes I was swarmed and I gave up and came back home !
If I sound like a big sissy let me tell you this and this is true !
My wife's sister got sick 10 days ago. She went into a coma and was put on a breathing tube in a IC unit ! After a 3 days of testing of all things she has West Nile Virus and darn near died. I have never seen or heard much about this illness but it is bad and reacts quickly ! She has lost her ability to walk and even talk! They have her in a rehab to get her to walk again !
This only took 3 days to do this to her !!!!!
So ole Pappy is not taking any chances for a while at the range ?
By the way this lady lives in the Lebanon area of Pa.! So be careful !

West Nile is bad stuff, willy. The southeastern part of the state has it. That includes Lebanon and Lancaster counties. It has also been identified in mosquitos close to where I live in Franklin county. Hope your wife's sister does OK. West Nile is nothing to be messed around with.

No brainer, that with all the "extra" rain we've had this year, skeeters will be on the rise. Haven't seen much in the news lately about counties/state agencies stepping up their spraying?
Just when I thought it couldn't get any muddier, had a close call yesterday while mowing at the club. I do the mowing around the edges of our pond with the Kubota Money Pit, aka the AWD diesel lawn tractor. It's sure footed enough not to wind up in the pond, especially on the steeper banks. Even with the rains we had back around the end of July and thru August, I could get down within a few feet of the water's edge where I normally mow.
Yesterday someone else had everything mowed around the pond, so I went down to do the edges, as usual. Didn't get very far and realized it was too muddy/soft where I can normally mow, darn near put 'er in the water. That chore is gonna hafta wait.
The ground is now saturated to the point, that there is literally no place left for the moisture to go. Having mowed every square foot of the place over the past 30+ years, there are places right now so muddy, that they are impassable for the first time in my experience. Can't imagine how anyone can bow hunt in the woods, without being eaten by skeeters, spray or no spray?

Today's paper lists another death from West Nile Virus.A 72 year old woman from Ephrata. My back yard is shaded and loaded with mosquitos. The only standing water on this property would be rainspouts.I load up with repellant when I mow.The frost can't come soon enough for me.

They warn us all about standing water and water in old tires, but we have so many storm water detention ponds here it ain't funny. But it's the tires....
The local company that makes a killing on stream bank remediation, made yet another swamp here in town, all in the name of saving the bay.
Oh, but it's the tires.....
3212, you saw the new swamp off Oak St, right?
