Our local animal shelter is having a benefit auction and dinner in June. Today, a guy told them he would donate a flintlock rifle to be auctioned off, and of course this met with opposition. They were worried about GUNS!!!!(omygod) in light of recent events in Florida, obviously. Some of the board are adamantly opposed. I told them that we are talking about an antique type thing that has not been used by any military worthy of the name for over a century. Further, I told them I would bid on it. What do yinz think?

I guess it all depends on the local crowd that normally supports the shelter. If you got mostly country people then it should go over good. But if you got town and city yuppie types they will probably make a fuss.

I would bid on it as well if I attended. OTOH, if the board consist of city folk who never had any experience around firearms, it may be a tough sell.
You could tell them that the firearm is exactly like the one that the West Virginia Football mascot carries at the WVU football games and during half time, he "fires off" a load of black powder. (No projectile obviously).
You could tell them it's exactly like all the firearms used in the annual Bushy Run Park re-creation of the French and Indian war....where about 40 of 'em are on guys running around in the woods pretending to shoot each other......powder charges only.
There are other examples you could likely come up with.....but OTOH...you may be up against the immovable object.
FWIW

In that case they don't need money very bad.

Actually they do, and refusing this donation is just plain stoopid.

Clear indication of whom and what you're dealing with there. Drop off a bag of dog food, be on your way.

1) is some of the opposition from anti hunters? Imagine the furor over it if it was an all expense paid archery trip to Africa. 2) the all guns are evil mentality is rampant and emboldened by the recent waves of furor. It may be a prime opportunity to educate them. 3) Some fools just need to exert their influence even if it means a closed minded irrational result.
I do not care for the folks who run and volunteer at the shelter where I adopted my dog. The dog is great, I appreciate the long hours volunteered at the shelter. I think they are raving lunatics. I donate a few bags of food every year on the anniversary of adopting her. That is all they will ever see from me. It is more than I need to do. I do it in hopes that some poor homeless critter will have the opportunity to make a human as happy as I am with my dog.

George, buy the gun from the guy who wants to donate it, and have him give the money to the shelter

It won't bring anything in that setting anyway. Not a good idea to auction it there.

When Ms. Doris suggested that they do a benefit auction/dinner similar to that done by another local organization (Tuscarora Wildlife Education Project) most members of the shelter board were opposed. Their thinking was that the TWEP auction was a gun auction, which it is not. They want to see a gun auction, I could take them to Reddings in Gettysburg. Ignorance bothers me. Most of the board members who oppose this probably voted for Hillary Clinton, and still have no clue why they lost. This is not New York City. It is Franklin County, where men are men and so are most of the women. Deer are also nervous here.
