On the subject of ancient, big bore boomers, we've had some black powder cartridge shooters at our club for years. Maybe 20 years ago, one of 'em bought a new Winchester hi-wall repro in 45-70. I think it passed to at least two other guys, because no one was fond of the recoil. Curved steel butt plate, fairly light weight rifle. The third owner was shooting it one day at the 100 yard range and asked if he could borrow my spotting scope. Couple benches away, a couple and their young son were shooting. The guy shooting the 45-70 would touch one off, then lean over to use the scope to his left. The kid asked him mom what the guy was doing, so I told the kid that round was so slow getting down range, that he liked to watch that big ol' chunk of lead hit the target after he'd pulled the trigger. When I looked back over at the shooter, he was giving me the stink eye.

My pal has a .300 Remington Ultra Mag U-Sight. He takes it to the range, hands it over to one of his pards, and says, "Here, you sight".

You don't need a 300-mag, ultra mag, or RUM to shoot at a target 1,000 yards away. I do this with a 6.5 Swede (modern action Savage) that has an MV of 2,900fps. You can shoot 60+ rounds at a meet and not have to ice your shoulder.

But it is not a flintlock
The Irish Team was tops in the world at long range shooting in the early 1870'2, using sidelock Rigby muzzle loading rifles to 1,000 yds. Look up the original Creedmoor match.
