Was looking for a gun to take care of a problem with a pesky wiley fellow, as well as some chucks. Came across a Savage Axis, plastic stocked 223 Rem with 7 power generic scope. Worth $200?

If it shoots a tight group it is certainly worth $200. The scope may need to be replaced. I have a Savage Axis in .270 and it is a good one. It isn't as nicely detailed as a Browning or a Weatherby, though. confused-smiley-013

I have always liked the accuracy in Savage rifles. Price wise, they are hard to beat.

That's a deal! I'm not a fan of the Axis, but that's a great price. I looked at both the Savage Axis and the Ruger American. I liked the weight and trigger of the Ruger over the Axis. The Ruger was a little more money but not much. For that price I would buy it.

Thanks all, picked it up. Next to shoot it and see. Might get to check it out Saturday. I can set up to 150 yds here on the farm with the current back stop. Scope is from some outfit called Guide Gear. Seems like an ok scope. Looked at a few guns at about 8 shops today. Some are pirates. Kinsey's wanted $389 for the same used axis rifle with a terrible Simmons scope on it. One shop wanted $349.00 for an H&R single in 223 with a Bushnell scope.

You can buy a brand new Axis at Walmart, scope included, for around $300. Might even be a bit less?

How old is ti Buddy ? I have a couple Axis and i like them for the price and the way they shoot. A good light weight rifle. Triggers are ruff but still shot well . $200 i wish i could find deals like that ! These have a 1 in 9 twist rate barrel . Mine didn't like light bullets !

At one time all Savage 223s came with a 1-9 twist. Club member had a 10FP (heavy barrel, synthetic stock) that shot just about any of his loads well, but did very well with bullets in the 60 and 70 grain weights.
That was back when ,223 bullets were beginning to become more common in heavier weights and lots of guys were going to faster twists in their competition AR15s. Before long many were putting 1-7 and 1-8 barrels on their ARs and shooting 75gr VLD bullets in hi-power matches.
Years ago I loaded 65gr JLKs in a 1-9 twist custom on a Savage M110 action. Then Knox quit making them, because he had so many orders for heavier 223 diameter bullets, he couldn't keep up.

Sportsman's Guide also sells guns. They list the Savage Axis rifles depending upon model and whether or not it has a scope from $277.39 (without scope) up. The brand of the scope is not stated, but I guess they have one with their brand name.

This model of weapon can actually cost 200 bucks. It is very well suited for your purpose. Be careful when choosing the size of the bullets so that your weapon supports the ammo, otherwise you will just damage your weapon. When I bought my first gun, I didn't know much about it yet, so I damaged my gun. After I found a very good review of CRO caliber cartridges on the BulkMunitions website. I strongly advise you to first familiarize yourself with all the nuances and then start actively using weapons, even if you do not need a special permit in your state.

Let us know what kind of groups it shoots. A gun for groundhogs and fox/'yotes to fill the gap between a .243 and .22 hornet is first gun I have been in the market for since my youngest turned twelve.
