The first Traditions I bought in the early 80's, came with a wooden rod. Of course, it broke, so I replaced it with brass. It ain't gonna break. The rest of my flints all have fiberglass. I'm just extra sure to be careful.

Hate fiberglass. Hickory is a good wood for a strong field ram rod. I have a solid brass rod I use at the range but way too heavy to carry in gun while hunting.

I bought a solid brass ramrod with a tee on the end a few years ago (Fort Chambers muzzy shop near Chambersburg). I use it mostly to do cleaning work at home and to do the occasional ball pull if a charge gets wet. The flinter is my old Thompson Renegade I bought way back when. The junk hides my desk.

I replaced the fiberglass one with an aluminum one. Light weight and strong.....but I did have to drill and pin the brass ends to keep 'em from coming off when using a patched jag.

I looked at them, Loggy. The old renegade still works OK, so hard to justify buying another flinter. I like the Great Plains rifle though. One day, I might weaken.

That Renegade looks in really good shape Mutt!! I had a TC PA Hunter I bought new back when they were made which I kick myself in the butt for selling. If TC would ever go back to making flinters I would buy one just for keepsake.

willy P, fiber glass doesn't usually flex that much. Was it a Delrin (plastic) rod. They do flex, sometimes alot. Especially if you try to use a 5/16 rod in a 50 caliber. A delrin road can be bent around in a circle without breaking. Sold by MSM as a "super rod" I like them, but would not have anything less than a 3/8 or 7/16
fiber glass will eventually wear the rifling just inside the muzzle AND leave little glass splinters win your hands.
