First of all the son text me about his deer hunt yesterday. We text back and forth and he says i am calling you this texting is a pain in the neck !
My phone rings and he says first thing he gets up and tries to get his wife up to get dressed to go. She sees it is showering rain and says she is staying home in bed ? He tells me he is up and dressed so he decides to just go for a ride .
He says he stopped and got a couple lunch cakes and some milk and drove down the road a ways and parked to eat and figure if it was worht going in to the woods ? As he is eating he says a knock came on his Jeep door and as he says "Scared the hell out of me !"
It is our area game warden . The warded ask him "Are you ok ?" Why do you ask,the boy says to him ? I seen you parked here and your lights were on and thought you may have problems ! He and the Warden talked for a while. He knows of my son and i for quite a while and he is a decent fellow and friendly. I guess as long as you are on the right side of the law ?
He tells the son get out of your Jeep and come back to my truck. My son is thinking "OH boy whats up now ?" Well the guys says i want to show you something and pulls out this really bis set of antlers !!! He tell the son "This was hit and i had to pick it up right where you are parked 2 days ago !
Then started to pour and the Warden said he was going to patrol a little bit.
My son go in to his Jeep and figured he would take the bake roads to his house just to stay out for a while ? He says the rain slowed down and quit as he came to a hollow we never went up. He said there was a nice trail heading up into it so he decided to take a walk up into the woods. A quarter mile up in it starts to rain. Big oaks and acorns all over the ground.
I am getting soaked and decide to go home and i look out ahead of me and there in the brush are 10 or more deer. To thick and far away to risk a shot. He says i am too wet to try to sneak up on them and i am getting cold ! These are over 100 yards away but low and behold he sees one closer ? He says about 80 or so yards and in and opening ! He had forgot to put his cows knee on his gun but used a sandwich bag he had in his coat and a piece of tape he had in the Jeep to hold it on the gun ? He says i figured i might as well give it a try at the lone doe. He pulls the plastic bag off the lock and takes aim and boom. The gun went off . He sees the doe drop right where it stood !!!!! He says i had to reload the gun and it was raining so hard rain was dripping into my quick shots and into my barrel! He got the gun loaded and slowly walked towards the deer as he counted his steeps and watched for it to get up and take off. He says rain was running down his hat brim into his eyes and off his noses !!!!! I got to 81 steeps he says and had to cross over a big oak that had fallen and quit counting at 81! He gets to the deer and it is dead ! After cleaning the deer he heads back to his car and half way there he decides to unloaded the gun and as wet as it was it went off ?
Any how i would not have the desire to go out in that weather, but he is young at 51 years old .
By the way he has a Lyman Deerstalker flinter and we use cheap shot bullets and 2XX powder at 70 grain loads .
