As you may have noticed i have quite a few questions posted here ! I have shot flintlocks for a few years but i would describe it as played with them. Never have i thought of doing it as i did with reloading or archery ? WHY NOT ? The main reason is because the season is in the worse time of Pa.s weather. Secondly the cost of the Flintlock rifles are very pricey ! Over the long years i have owned at lest 10 different flinters but sold them . The urge would come and i would buy one but through the season the weather would just get so bad i would just not care to go out in the frozen snow or the bitter cold { as it was this season}. The thing is i do like to know just how things work ! I never cared over the years but this fall a little switch in my head clicked and i had know what i could find out about the "Beast known as the Flintlock rifle ", so i ask questions on this site. It sure was faster than trying to read a bunch of books or other things from every where ! Anyhow thank all you folks whom replied and boosted my knowledge on this type of guns . PS: I never made it out with my flintlock at all this season ! When i could go or my son was able to be off work ,i am 71 and i will not go out by myself,it rained or it was so cold and the ground became crunchy or slippery ! Like today,1-12-2018 ,it is raining ! Thanks again people for your help.

I think flintlock comes in at the best time of year for hunting deer in general. There is no better time for bucks than the first 3 weeks of November, but for deer hunting in general, it is hard to beat cold weather and snow cover. The tracks and trails tell the tale. The deer will be active, visible, and grouped together.

GOB, at 71 I'm sure you have your physical issues. However, you do your best to "get out there". And frankly....that's what counts. I too, appreciate your post. Keeps things interesting!!

Been grumbling for years that flinter season should be the entire month of January in most areas of PA.
Low impact on the deer, lots of fun for those so inclined to trudge around with the smoke pole.
Weather is almost always crappy for the three weeks after Christmas. Some years like this one, it's too damn cold or windy. Most of the time there's always a week or more of rainy weather. Seems rare around here, that we have some snow cover AND moderate weather during flinter seasons, which are the best of times.
Have only ever made it up to camp after Christmas once to hunt and that was for an aunt's funeral. Got out for a few hours that time, but the snow was crunchy, temps were in the low 20s with wind and I cut no tracks in my woods.
Sure wasn't going up this year, as daytime temps were often in the low teens or single digits, with lows below zero at nights, most of the first two weeks.

Been grumbling for years that flinter season should be the entire month of January in most areas of PA. . I have been talking to commissioners about that for years as well. Flintlock should end statewide on the same date. That date being where it ends now in the SRAs. I guess I will send another email off to them to remind them of this potential.

Flinter Season whole month of January would be great Denny!! That way many would better be able to get a lil more time hunting days affording better weather conditions. Example being this weekend and some of the harsh weather we experienced this past week or 2.

I kinda disagree.I feel that the weather is usually complete crap most of flintlock season and this year was no exception.Still no other place to put it though.

If you are as hard as woodpecker lips, and can tolerate the weather, those -3 degree mornings and 10 degree afternoons are great for killing deer if you know where to look.

If you can stand the cold, this is a great time of year. I had a great season even though I couldn't pull it off. Had ample opportunity.

I remember years ago I had to give up my first round doe pick if I bought a flinter tag. Oh MY, the horror of an unregulated doe kill!
PGC is so far behind the times.

I was out in it and my son killed one in it.It just blows and a to me,a deer just isn't worth the misery. It's "harder" than the lips on a woodpecker. It isn't the cold that bother me as much as the snow and rain when hunting with a flintlock.

It's "harder" than the lips on a woodpecker. Ya know Doug.....maybe you should think about backing off on that am drinking? Your gonna have a "sexual assault" case against you by all those woodpecker's you've been trying to kiss.
