We've hunted with a bunch of different dogs this year and I have to say,I was pretty impressed with Dick's dog.I was also impressed with the other kid's pup.He obviously put a lot of time into her because she was really getting on the birds, holding point and dropping them when she brought them back.Really impressive for an 8 month old pup.Pheasants forever and Fox twp sportsman's club really put a pile of work into the youth and veterans up here.Fox twp leases 350 acres that's a youth only area. They raise their own birds and put 50 out every friday throughout the season. They also do a great job manicuring the property for pheasant habitat. There are kids hunting it but I actually think it's under utilized.

That's great that they do all that for kids. Obviously some very dedicated people involved to make that happen !
That hunt has to have Jordan pretty excited about getting his dog out there on the birds .

Bird hunting is great way to teach young people safety and discipline when hunting, and no youngsters should ever grow up without a dog, with us it was beagles, rabbits were plentiful and all of our neighbors with gardens loved us for thinning them out.
It's a terrible shame that our grouse are gone, that was some of the most enjoyable late season hunting available to us, maybe some day your son will also see the day when the grouse rebound to huntable numbers.
I do feel that the end of the pheasant program in the end will turn out to be one more of the sticks that break our youth of the hunting traditions that we were all lucky enough to grow up with.
I love the fact that you have some people that care enough to help out, instead of just bitching and whining about the idiots out there, if there is any way to support that group post it up so we can contribute.

I imagine Fox twp would take a donation lol. It's an open club that costs like $10/yr to join. They have a really nice facility but it's what they do for the youth and vet's that's most impressive. If you go to one of their meetings, every stands for the pledge of Allegience and they recognize every vet in the room.If you show up at that youth area on a saturday with a kid, there will be guys waiting to take them out with their dog. Most of these guys are older fellas who don't even hunt anymore for themselves. They just raise dogs to take kids out.In a time of so much negativity,it's really refreshing to see people just doing the right thing without any selfish motives. It also teaches the kids to do the same. The kid in the picture was in the same boat as my son last year.He hunted with someone everyday and begged his grandfather for a dog for over a year. His GF finally caved and now he's telling me it was the best money he's ever spent. His dog was the one I texted a picture to my wife saying he'd won it in a drawing. That kid got a hold of me this morning and wants to hunt with us on saturday with both pups. He's a nice kid and I most likely will take him up on it.I was never really into hunting these ditch chickens and I'm still not.I haven't even carried a shotgun yet. It's about the dogs not the birds and I can see why people get so into it.At the same time,it's pretty cool watching a punk kid swing on fast moving bird and dump it.I love to hunt deer but you often get a 30 second adrenaline rush followed by several hours of back breaking work. With pheasants it's a constant rush when those dogs go on pint and the work afterword takes a couple mintes.

Hat's off to this fine organization!! Hat's off to R.S.B. as well.He still donates a lot of his time to promote hunting.Dick is actually a pretty fun guy to hang around. He dishes it out but also takes abuse fairly well.

We still have places with pretty good grouse hunting Jim.They aren't as wide spread as they used to be but they're out there. The late season was always when I hit them but that's over now.

We have a few grouse on our farm in NY, but far too few to justify shooting any of them, I have not flushed a grouse in Crawford county in 5-7 years, it's a sad thing, that's for sure.
I do see a couple of woodcock each year, mostly migrants just moving through, but the dogs love them.

The first two birds we flushed on the youth day were woodcock.Jordan didn't have a migratory bird stamp plus they taste like crap so I called him off shooting them.I made the mistake of shooting one years ago.Never again.

A woodcock was the first small game "animal" I ever shot when I was 12 years old, I think that was also the last one I ever shot, I will never figure out why fish eat worms and taste soo good yet woodcock also live on worms and taste sooo bad!

Looks like a super time. But, it looks like the "kid" on the extreme far left has the horse ready to leave the barn.

LOL.That kid is 79 years old. It's about a 1/2 mile, mostly uphill walk to get to the pheasant fields. He takes his grandson up there every day, makes it to the top and sits on a log while the kid hunts.I was surprised he was that old.

The weather on saturday was dismal so when we had a small break in the rain we decided to take Bailey on her first hunt.As soon as we got to our hunting area, the rain started but we headed in anyway. Not expecting anything instead of letting her have fun we were pleasantly surprised. As soon as we let her go,she just right into the cover and started working. How they know what to do at 12 weeks is insane but this dog was hunting. Not 10 minutes into it,her still starts wagging like crazy and she started getting all excited.A couple minutes later she locks up and I went it and stated kicking around.A hen flushed at her feet and Jordan insulted her with two quick misses. When it was all said and done, she pointed two legitimate pheasants and a woodcock that I wouldn't let him shoot. His shooting was off but he did manage to kill a cockbird. The dog went right after it,found it but didn't have a huge interest to give it up.Overall, she did much better than expected. She came when called, didn't get too far out in front of us and acted like a Marine, running towards the sound of gunfire.I'm sure she missed quite a few birds and she has a lot to learn but watching your kid dump a bird over his puppy, priceless.
