Woke up to heavy rain, but hey, its the rut. I was able to make the walk in between downpours to set up my tree umbrella before the sky opened up at first light again. Got settled in and hoped the rain would stop, but it didn't. In the dreary foggy darkness, movement caught my eye below me. I was very surprised to see a good buck with tall tines and a mature buck swagger trotting up the hill at an angle that would take him out of range. I grabbed my bow and hit the grunt call. He stopped and peered my direction. When he resumed his trot, I hit him again with a grunt and he turned and began to angle my way. When he hit the 30 yard shooting lane, the arrow was sent on its way. I saw him mule kick and run in a semi circle which brought him back to my stand. At 15 yards, he began the death wobble and I watched him fall. For the next two hours I sat in my stand waiting for the rain to stop before climbing down to run my hands over his rack for the first time. It was a perfect double lung on this heavy 8 point with 11 inch G2s. His neck was swollen and he had the chest of a brahma bull. My season has been very slow so far but I always say that there is no substitution for time in the stand. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Great buck Ridge ! This time of year it doesnt matter what weather or wind or length of time you have to hunt, you have to have your butt in a stand. Funny you had a tree umbrella. I have never had success when using one. Mounting? Or European mount?

I told my wife that the next buck I get mounted will be a true Pa trophy. While this is my best buck to date, there have been bigger ones killed on the same farm. I probably should have got it mounted, in retrospect.

I sawed out the "skullcap w/horns" on mine. Mount 'em on a chunk of wood, close enough. All deer heads pretty much look the same. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Kate could likely drop that buck with one shot. He'd just miss it by three feet? ![P-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/pirate.png)

Yeah Ridge I was just gonna cut the head off my buck and do a European skull mount like I have for the past 22 yrs when the wife asked if I was gonna mount him or just cut his head off like all the rest ? I said well I dont know and her reply was , and I quote " well your a BLEEPING idoit of you dont get him mounted !" so guess where the ol' boy was at tonite ... Sounds like what happened to my cousin a few years ago, LB? He's taken some very nice bucks over the years, could never afford to have any heads mounted. Killed a dandy 10 pointer a few years back, wife thought he should have a mount of it. "Outta the blue", his wife and kids chipped in for a head mount.

Great buck and kuddos to you for going out in conditions like that. Definitely a big mature deer. Its amazing how within seconds your season can go from a frustrating one to one of the most rewarding. I guess thats part of that makes it so appealing.
