Mugs and I spoke with Richard this morning and booked a hunt for October 11. Richard is running a special that he calls his "Open Season Pheasant Bonanza!". The birds go for $15 a piece and you must take a minimum of 15. Hunt has to be scheduled October 1-15. This is not too shabby a shooting preserve price, since pheasants usually go for about 22 - 25. Mugs got itchy this morning on the walk when he saw some wild turkeys. I thought if anyone might be interested in this sort of thing, I should post something here. Happy hunting.

My son turned 12 this year and really got into smashing clay birds over the past few years.I bought him a Franch affinity youth 12 ga for Christmas. It's a pretty light gun and while the recoil didn't start to bother him until after the second box of shells,I decided to put a good kickeaze pad on it.Well,AS luck would have it,the hole pattern was off so I got a hold of a guy that pretty much only works on guns for kids.He did a great job and also offered to take my son out for pheasants anytime he wanted. This guy has a GSP and a Brittany but he no longer hunts. He works with kids on their wing shooting and keeps the dogs strictly for taking kids out,a one of a kind type of guy.I've never been big into hunting put and take bird because I've never had a dog but I imagine that will change after oct.I doubt I'll tote a gun but I'm looking forward to watching the kid.

I used to like upland game hunting, Doug, but I share your dislike of preserve hunting. It is really the only thing out there for Mugs, and this is for him, not me.

I don't have a dislike of preserve hunting for birds.I think it's a great thing for guys who have dogs and want to see them work.I just never had a dog and never had any interest in stomping through brush to shoot a dumb bird.If I can get it past my wife,my kid will have a dog and I'm relatively certain, the two will see bird preserves. It's no different than the birds they stock on game lands. It never interested me to just go flush and shoot them, although it doesn't bother me that other do.I'm looking forward to taking my kid so he can see some good dogs work.I understand it's about the dog and not the shooting. You have to remember Mutt,I like dogs more than I like most people.Anything to make the dog happy is fine by me.I also like wing shooting but other than crows,it's starting to be a tough thing to do.Grouse numbers are crumbling and we really don't have the best habitat for rabbits. That pretty much leaves pheasants which wouldn't interest me unless I have a dog and a kid to share it with.Any excuse to spend time outside with your dog is a good excuse.

doug, I wish I were half the man Mugs thinks I am. Forget about Mugs. Just keep the wife bamboozled and you'll make out just fine.

Near Chambersburg, Buzz. You are right. Opposite sides, at least. What is going to be even more fun about this one is that four other guys have already signed on. Mugs will have his work cut out for him.

Quite a way, if we shoot like we normally do. Every once in awhile, we get lucky and hit one. Not Mugs' problem, or so he tells me. smileys-whistling-823718

Well, from the behind the scene's PM rumor mill.....if you did that, poor Mug's would be really fat after one day of your shooting. (Hey....not me....I just listen to what others have said) LMAO2

Update: Today's hunt got washed out. I can't go next week since I will be hunting at Deerfield Plantation, so I don't know when we will get mugs out. We will probably take him to camp the opening week of pheasant season.
