Have you ever made up your own bait for Red fox?

I used to make mine. Most of it was better at attracting 'possums than fox. I made some good bait by chopping groundhog into chunks about the size of a golfball, I utted mine first and threw out any entrails except the liver and bladder(include any urine). I put this in a glass jar and made sure to leave the lid loose to keep flies out and let the gasses escape-the jar will break if the gasses can't get out! I used to let this rot down to a sickening black liquid; that was a mistake. A better way is to let the decay go on for only a few days in a shady spot, away from the house, and use a preservative to "fix" the bait and stop the rotting. I used salt or sodium benzoate. SB can be bought at a trapper supply place. Beaver and muskrat meat work pretty well too, but I have only used it when it was fresh during trapping season.

I rarely use bait. Always use plain lure. My favorite is Violator 7 or gusto sometimes both. After mid January I use a gland lure. If there isnt many deer in the area I will use a shot of fox pizz on the backing of my set but here is Lancaster the deer love the fox pee and end up stepping in the trap. I have also had it happen in northern Potter also. I just put a pea size lump of violator 7 down the hole and gusto on the back of the rim when using them together.
