So, my brother, Grouse28, with 2 dogs and his woman in tow, heads for the wilds of Maine. Has three friends with places up there. Friends? Him? LOL They are staying at a different place each of the next three weeks. Anyway, yesterday he called, after driving miles to get cell reception, near Ft Kent, and said he has not even SEEN a grouse. Drove over a 100 miles on dirt roads the one day, and never saw a grouse on the road, which is very unusual. Popular method of hunting grouse in Maine, by the locals, is to set in the back of a pickup and shoot them off the roads. Apparently legal? Anyway, hope his action picks up or it will be a long three weeks and the dogs will be pissed at him. I actually hated to tell him I flushed 8 on Sunday in good ole PA.

Drove 30 miles to Ft Kent to get some trail camera film developed once many years ago. Neat little town back then. Just the St John's river seperates you from Canada there, and an immigration checkpoint.

I watch North Woods Law, which is filmed in Maine, every now and then and they regularly bust people for loaded guns in vehicles and firing from vehicles. Usually deer hunters but I think I remember them cited a man shooting at a grouse from a vehicle too. Hunting from motor vehicle. It is unlawful to hunt from or with any motor vehicle, trailer or motorboat, except that migratory waterfowl may be hunted from a motorboat in accordance with federal regulation. (NOTE: Paraplegics and single or double amputees of the legs may hunt from motor vehicles which are not in motion).

Yeah, saw an episode recently where they had grouse decoys and busted people who got it off a UTV and shoot at it.

LOL, I guess it's pretty common up there then. I don't know the laws.
He's just hoping his dogs can find some.

I have seen more turkey than grouse up here. Must be tougher turkey up here to withstand the brutal winters. Cause everyone knows when the turkey numbers are down in PA it is because of the previous winter was so bad! Have started to see a few grouse. Met several "road hunters" complaining that they have driven 75 miles and saw only two birds and they were skittish, didn't even let them open the truck doors! Last year they said you could get your limit in 10 or 12 miles. In PA we count flushes per hour up here it is birds per mile. No one uses a patterning board to check their shotguns up here, just a test shot on a dry dusty road is all they need. Beautiful up here and very relaxing, birds or no birds.

Sorta like the jerk that drove thru our yard at camp, with a trailer, and parked in front of our screened in porch, while I was enjoying the day.
Took balls not only to trespass, but drive thru our yard.
Anyway, the jerk proceeds to start telling hunting stories.
His best was the biggest buck he ever killed, "in season".
Turns out he was road hunting and saw this 13 pt buck bedded, at a good distance. He's getting ready for the shot and someone drives up and he encourages them to have a shot at the buck.
Turns out, he killed the buck, "in season", but, it was the then 3 day DOE season.
Hey, at least he wasn't a poacher that shot it OUT of season.

For some reason even though I can't find it, I thought it was legal to roadhunt in Maine. Thought you could shoot from vehicle, but if you loaded out of vehicle that it was legal to shoot. Maybe that changed?

I had a grouse walk past my stand this evening. I swear he came out of a small brush pile in front of the stand, but had just walked past it an hour previous.
