This am I took the PGC "Cable Restraint Course" at a local gun club. So, I'm now certified to use cable restraint's for trapping. I actually found the course to be very educational and informative. The use of cable restraints have been studied prior to the authorization of use and were found to be very effective for "holding" (restraining) animals without injuring.....as long as (the key part) the cable restraints were properly set up with the right equipment, and (just as important) properly set up in the field so that any animal restrained by the cable could no be seriously or fatally injured by the improper placement of the cable restraint, or the improper setup of the device.
These types of "traps" are fairly easy to use and make, if done properly and within the legal requirement, and I can see why a course is needed and required in order for any fur trapper to use them.

I used them for beaver trapping before they were allowed on land. I found them very effective for beaver and my son caught his first beaver with a snare he set himself at twelve years old. I took the course to use them on land the first year it was offered but haven't done much fox and 'yote trapping since. I plan to make them a big part of my trapline when I get the time to get back into it. I have several dozen that I bought and made up waiting to be used.

I just now hit the "order" button to buy enough cable and other supplies to make 20 cable restraints. In addition to the "stuff" to make the actual cable restraints, I also just flat out purchased the cable "hangers" that I will need to "hang" the cables on. I was going to make these as well, but I would need my nephew to weld a few small items together. And him with his newbie girlfriend 'n all.......you know where I would be on the "totem pole" of life.

Talk about FAST delivery!!!! My "stuff" came today!! I didn't ship it extra fast or anything, and it came from Minnesota all the way here!! I bot a few parts to fix two of my MB550's and I will need to get busy making some Pa. legal cable restraints. With any luck I will take a trophy buck on Monday. You know.....the normal 14+ pointer that you guys all pass on. stirthepot Then I can focus on the traps.

My plans were to set out my traps today. Ain't gonna happen. Maybe by Friday. Heck....I was so confident that I even bot a cat tag!!!

Thanks Dutch. In the "Hundred acre wood" or playground, I know there are deer (yes....even hard to get a pic of the bucks!!!) bear, coyotes....so there HAS to be some cats!! I'm just thankful that the bears should be sleeping......but if not, my traps are only MB-550's and the cable restrains have 285=lbs breakaway's on 'em. Both deer and bear can break those.......or so the PGC says so. smileys-whistling-823718

You don't make one of those cement block sets I told you about, did ya? No......but I got something just as good. I got a "straw\grass" pile. And how do I know it's good? 'Cause I've been watching the neighbors cat all summer. As the pile grew bigger.....the cat came every evening. It would get into it's "cat position" and sneak up on the pile, and within two or three minutes pounce on a mouse!! If it missed one or two (Ok...maybe not the brightest cat) it would get one eventually. Kind of like at the "you can't lose" amusement park. So....if the cat is there......

This just isn't my year for getting out the traps!! So.....yesterday it was raining like.....elephants so I decided to wait until today. So today I did a final gathering of my "stuff" and realized the ground was so saturated from the rain, that I would just go up and set my cable restraint traps. Easy as there is no digging....no lure or baiting....and no real "blocking" to do. Just locate a good path that the small fox or coyote are active on and do a quality set up and make sure the set isn't going to tangle with large ground weeds or trees,, or the animal could possibly hang itself. Well, when I left my house after loading up my cart, the sun was out and there was a light breeze. 40 minutes later when I got to the mountain top, the wind was a steady 35 to 40 with gust to 50mph!!! I unlocked the gate and it darn near knocked me over!!!
Enough of that stuff......I figured I would have a heck of a time attempting to get a quality set with that kind of wind. Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow..........
