I saw a bunch of deer around camp this weekend and many of the smaller bucks still carried velvet. I was shown a trail cam pic taken on Sept 11th of a huge buck that still had velvet hanging.

Part of it is that these young deer are using energy to put into skelatal growth yet, and the maturation process of antlers comes second.
Even changing from summer to winter coat takes a great deal of protein away from every deer. It is said that if your deer are going into winter coat "late", it is because they are stressed nutritionally.
Must say, the does I have on cams this year are in excellent shape. There have been some years when even in late August, ribs were showing. Not anymore. They are fat and in winter coat.

One summer I saw an 8 pointer whose velvet was gone in late June.

Probably more likely that it still had prior years hard rack than a full new hard rack in June ? Dunno, sounds strange wither way ?
