Just got back from Cape May NJ and the annual family (25 of us) jaunt. Spent a good bit of time shark fishing off the beach. My boy got into it a few years back and is on the fast track learning curve. Me, I just take instructions from him and have fun. We caught a fair number of 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 foot Browns; great runs! But my boy was focused on hooking a big Sand Tiger...He got it! We didn't have too much time to mess with it after we beached it but it's somewhere between 7 1/2 and 8 feet we think. What a fish to take off the beach! Muab

Nice shark, and a nice vacation report, muab. The tragedy of my being retired is that I never get a vacation anymore. Nothing to look forward to but hunting season.

Sweet. This is something I always wanted to try my hand at.
Lets hear about the gear set up, bait used, time fished etc..... Did you yak the baits out? How far....

Ridge, we yaked some out one day but not many. (My brother's boy had the kayak, didn't seem to play well with others that day; some kind of rum drink with mint leaves floating around in it may have had something to do with it. ) This Tiger and all but one Brown were caught casting off the beach as far as we could cast the rig. As for gear I'll get my boy to write it down and pass it on. We were using bunker for bait...basically a half bunker per hook. Big circle hooks, I think 75 lb. braid line with 100 pound shock leader and a lot of specialty gear going into rigging up. Very loose drag. Let'um take it and run with it, then tighten the drag and hammer back to set the hook and then hang on for the ride; loosen the drag for each run. It was a blast! We fished all hours. Early morning. Night until 10:30 or so one night. Funny thing was night is supposed to be the time to fish but we caught most of ours during daylight hours. The Tiger was caught at 12:00 noon! Go figure. I will say this...when we caught sight of the Tiger coming in things got serious quick! Also, we cleared the beach of any swimmers when we pulled the Tiger in. I'll try to get some more pics. Muab

Yeah. I bet you cleared the water with the Tiger. That would have to be pretty darn fun for sure. Most of the guys I see doing it are yaking the baits out there past the bar but it is interesting to see you were catching them by casting and during high sun.

Great pics there Muab!!
On those Mustad demon circle hooks.......ive used them for stripers & never had to set or drive the hook home("hammer back") as you said. After the run....just start reeling & the circle hook does what its supposed to do(not gut hook but lip/mouth ) for minimal injury on release. Mebbie with a shark its different?

Interesting thing you said that about the circle hook Old Salt; we have quite a few that would take it, run with it, and then when we went to set the hook drop it. Don't know what was going on. Thinking they may have been smaller fish, maybe not even shark and were unable to get the whole bait in their mouth...but they sure pulled the line out in taking the bait. Muab

Maybe that was it Muab. With stripers I leave them run for at least 25 feet or more with bail open or clicker on if a baitcaster then just shut the bail and start a slow winding in. The circle hook then works it's way to the lip(normally corner of mouth) and sets itself. Sometimes when I feel the positive hook set I then give it a pump or 2 but not before. I used to try to drive home the hook on the initial run but found that more times than not you would pull the hook out the mouth.
Those are beautiful fish!! I will have to try shark fishing. I do pick-up some small sand sharks while fishing for flounder but most are under 2'.

Just got back from 10 days in Chincoteague. A lil stormy over the weekend plus the surf was churned up too much to fish. Had a great trip with the Mrs enjoying the sites & wunderful seafood. Next on tap will be the 44th Annual Chincoteague Oyster Festival soon coming up!!

Before I got ill, I use to vacation in the Ocean City Md area. I would surf fish in the evening when the crowds would leave for dinner and such. Caught my share of sand shark, but for the week we would stay I would always "latch" onto a nice size stingray. May....those things are heavy to haul in!! I always released 'em as I didn't want to mess with the cutting up during vacation. But those 'Ray's can get BIG!! Fun stuff!!!

Terry Brady had a column in the PON last month on the proper way to clean and prepare Blue Crabs... and it didn't involve steaming them live. But it did involve 3 people cracking, prying and spraying. It sounded cool, but also sounded like a bunch of work.

Too much work for me. I prefer the good ole Chessy Bay live steamin method. Luv sucking/slurping that good stuff out excluding the lungs that is!!!
