Loggy, I caught a 4ft. sand bar shark in the bay last week. Biggest fish I ever caught. We also caught 3 rays.

One thing about the Chessy I have never understood is this, the oysters are the filter for the bay, and populations are WAY down, yet they still allow harvest.
Why wouldn't they severely cut back on harvests to increase oyster numbers?
Instead, they hammer farmers upstream for being the cause of the bays problems?

Dutch....much is being done in oyster seeding, reef reconstruction etc with positive signs of population restorations resulting coupled with the bays overall health improvement contributing. The Chesapeake's oyster population, devastated by disease, pollution and overfishing, is believed to have fallen to about 1 percent of historical levels. Thankfully, It is currently on a rebound.

Yes, I know it was at 1%. Thats what I'm saying, the "filter" should be protected from harvest.

Studies show that commercial harvesting has minimal impact. The disease etc resulting from pollution was the primary source for the decline. The oyster beds in VA(inshore not bay) really look healthy this summer. Hopefully, MD is coming back too.
