It's the second day of winter, can Spring be that far away? Gobbling will begin in earnest in mid-end March up north and they will be well into it down south. I personally like to use I 70 as an imaginary dividing line between North and South Gobbling Activity. By second day of Spring all my calls will be tuned, by end of March all my clothes will be sprayed well for ticks, and our annual Osceola hunting trip will soon getting started. By end of May the season will be over for another year, and the memories and photos will get added to the lifetime spring gobbler hunting flashback books and online picture folders.
After the Mossy Oak Camo Shotguns, Clothing and Boots are put away, the second round of having fun begins. The stories told in many circles bring back the hunts as if they happened yesterday including those early 1980's Pennsylvania and Virginia Spring Gobbler Hunts. Now 17 states later with gobbler tags fill out another memories treasure chest gets opened, plus the 3 states that I have zero (0) tags filled out so far.
As I said somewhere else on this forum it's all about the Gobbler Gobblin', Struttin', Drumin', inside 40 yards', and the Gobbler conversations leading up to the shot. While many Gobblers have died over the years, however it seems invariably a couple each year I let walk only to be hunted another day when the "show", as I like to put it, finally gets fulfilled. As the spring days lengthen during April and into May the Gobblin' starts to decrease, and it is time to change early spring hunting tactics to late season hunting tactics, as I envariably have to do many times each year. And it is actually that quiet Gobbler at the end of May that draws my attention the most. At this time of year a single gobble or double gobble means the most to me, Let The Game Really Begin for the Master is now in charge. And the Master is not me! As Wilbur says "let the game of cowboys and indians begin.
Since I do not do Gobbler mounts, except for the one record book Goulds trophy mount - Mexico 2004 Hunt - on display inside the front door at Harrisburg Bass Pro Shops, the beard and legs/spurs boxs will get opened many times in the next 9 months and the cycle will repeat itself, God Willing, Gobblers Gobbling, and Don Enabling. For once again as the dawn of a new spring begins it will be time to have more fun than most Gobbler hunters can imagine!
