For those of you who get the PA Outdoor News, I'm sure you saw on the cover page about the snowshoe hare study being done by the PGC and Penn State University. I found it rather interesting that they found the snowshoes in areas where they thought they no longer existed such as the southern counties like right here in Somerset! They found them in Centre, Mifflin and Snyder counties as well.
Being a lifelong resident of Somerset County, I have actually seen snowshoes, although it's been a long time. The PGC used to stock them in the 70's around the area. I saw one while trout fishing along Clear Shade Creek in it's brown phase coat in the late 80's. The last one I saw was one that was harvested by a friends young son during the season in the early 90's. I haven't seen one since but they claim they are in the area.

The more timbering there is, the better for the hares.
