So i ran into someone that is willing to sell me his t/c hawken percussion in .45 cal. Does anyone have any experience with one? I can get it for $100 which is a steal. However i cannot use it for flintlock season and from what i have read .45 cal is on the weak side.

I dunno if it's a "steal." Is the stock in good shape? Remove the barrel. This easy to do...just tap out the one brass pin and pull the barrel straight up. The barrel is attached via a hook breach so once you remove the pin it should come right out. If anything would give you an issue it would be the lock. If so, just remove the one screw that holds the lock in, leave the screw there and "tap" it so the lock comes out of the stock. Then the barrel should come right out.
Now, look closely at the stock. Grab the stock frond and the wrist of the stock and give it a subtle yet firm twist. Twist it both ways to make sure the stock does not have any cracks in it. If the stock has cracks you will know this right away. If it does have cracks they are "fixable" but you should know what your buying.
While you have the barrel off you can examine it for rust. Take a flashlight and look down the barrel for rust and corrosion. Black powder will do damage quick if the rifle was not taken care of.
Just some thoughts.

I've had a T/C Hawken flinter for years. Worst thing about it was the frizzen. Replaced it many years ago with a new Lyman frizzen, problem solved.
Downside to the 45 cal. these days, is finding bullets. Most places have 50s and 54s, not much in the way of the 45s. Kinda gone the way of the dodo bird. Know someone that can make me round balls, but I got to liking T/C Maxi Hunters in mine.
Might be a struggle to find a flinter lock for it if you wanted to convert it, but a good 'smith should be able to handle that?

I wouldn't be concerned about the .45 caliber. My wife's late uncle hunted with a 45 caliber flintlock every year and killed a deer every year with it.

Agreed.Alot of people use the .45 in flinters and have good success.I have a box of .45 round balls for my Hawkin that is the same as yours.I haven,t hunted with it in other seasons yet but I plan on too.Hornady has the round balls and are not hard to find.I got mine in G/MTN.but should be available from multiple online shops.Buy her if it is in good shape.Don,t try to use a flashlight.Buy a drop in bore light. They are cheap.

A 50 cal is a 100 yd gun. a 45 is an 80 yd gun. A deer 50 yds away won't know the difference.
Don't make the mistake of thinking you can make up the difference with more powder, it doesn't work that way. Black powder is slower burning and there comes a point that more powder just burns in the air after the ball has left the muzzle.
All that said, a 400 grain bullet fired from a 45 over 70 grains of powder is equivalent to what Buff hunters used to kill buff to 400 yds. The weight of the bullet makes the difference, far more than the amount of powder.

If it's a fast enough twist (1:48 or more) use a conical bullet. Round balls are best with slow 1:66 twist barrels. I've hunted with a Kentucky in .45 for years and you won't have to worry about the energy that rifle can muster. They shoot
