HCO2627 By Readshaw. Changes the first day of the regular antlered deer hunting season to the first Saturday following Thanksgiving.
* December 8, 2015 03:41 PM * Rep. Harry Readshaw * Antlered Deer Season change * In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that would change * the first day of the regular antlered deer hunting season to the first * Saturday following Thanksgiving. * * Over the holiday weekend, I had calls from folks about changing the * "first day of buck". Many of these individuals have moved out of the * Commonwealth but return to Pennsylvania for the Thanksgiving holiday. * They would like to return to the sport they enjoyed when being raised * in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, they have to return to their homes by * Tuesday after Thanksgiving which prevents them from hunting. * * By changing the date for the "first day of buck" season to Saturday, * it would enable hunters to enjoy the Pennsylvania woods while "home for * the holiday". This will also enable hunters to introduce the sport to * their children and/or grandchildren. It would allow seasoned hunters * extra time to re-enforce gun safety and to teach proper animal tracking * techniques and sportsman etiquette in the woods to novice or young * hunters. * * In addition, should this legislation be enacted, there could be an * increase in nonresident licenses to accommodate hunters over the * Thanksgiving weekend.

I think the PGC and hunters should make this decision, not the Legislature.
I believe a Saturday opener would maybe give more people a chance to hunt tho.

I don't like the idea much but if it doesn't mean Sunday hunting, I could live with it. I do think it would lead to alot more license sales.

I still like the Monday opener but it doesn't matter that much to me. I agree with Dutch that it should be decided by hunters and pgc.

Not interested unless they allow hunting the next day.

We already have a Saturday Bear Opener. I wish they would tack Sunday on there as a start.

I used to be against a Saturday opener but support it now. With that said, I oppose the change being made legislatively, though. This is within the responsibilities of the PGC since this is a seasons and bag limits issue. It should be them making the decision.

I see it as the final blow that would end the northern tier......I forsee hunters arriving Thursday and leaving Sunday

Been hunting bear/deer from a Northern Tier Hunting Camp(140 miles from home) for over 50 years. I can only see positive implications with a Sunday tack on to the current Saturday Bear Opener plus if Regular Deer went to a Saturday Opener....same positive effect. More days would be spent at camps due to the continuous season days. A win, win for sportsman(more days to hunt) plus helping the suffering Northern Tier economy.
As a side....many school districts could remove the Monday/Tuesday days off for deer season & possibly shorten the school term duration thus saving taxpayer dollars..

Perfectly happy with the Monday opener. Most schools that I'm familiar with - both up north and here at home - have that Monday off. As for guys heading to camps on Thursday, only those free of the all-encompassing female influence, could ever pull that one off without serious retributions coming their way. Any time she tells me we're having two dozen people here for Thanksgiving dinner and I offer to head for camp early in order to free up a seat at the table, I get the same response: You aren't here Thursday, your "stuff" will be out in the driveway when you come back". Even if I say the departure could be put off until after dinner, same response.

For thousands of years Pennsylvania hunters have geared up and planned hunts for the Monday opener. Hey......that's all I got.

A Saturday opener for bears allowed more youth to be involved, as not many school districts have that Monday off. Including Sunday would be great for bear hunters who now go home Sunday morning. If we had a Saturday opener for deer, I may not even bother, if we don't have Sunday. In the future, I may take the first Friday off and then have 2 full days to hunt.

Saturday opener has been the case for decades in Maryland. If they go to a Saturday opener, will the season stay until the now second saturday, (which will become the third) adding an extra day to the season? Not sure what effect having a Saturday opener and then a day off before Monday would have on the herd. I would really rather see the PGC make the decision, But often wondered why it didn't. If Sundays get added, I can see a major change in herd management decisions, possibly with shortening the season.

Ohio gun season runs the Monday after Thanksgiving Nov 28 thru Sunday Dec 4. Then it comes back in for the weekend Dec 17-18. Kinda different way of doing it, but you end up with 4 weekend days plus the Monday opener. They also have a youth season Nov20-21. That would never work in PA as PA hunters wouldn't want kids to have the first crack.
