Emma and I hunted a new covert yesterday and wasn't disappointed. A clearcut ridge growing back with an incredible variety of trees and shrubs. We moved 9 woodcock with 7 pointed birds. I had shots at 5 but only connected on 1 hissyfit. Ya I'm in a shooting slump. Could blame it on the new gun I was shooting but I haven't been shooting my old favorites very good either this fall.
This covet should have held some grouse, but like most of my southcentral Pa coverts it was empty of our state bird.
Emma is never happy with the picture taking, but she's the reason the day turned out so special.

This is my "mystery" gun. It is a 16 gauge built on the Jones Underlever action (an English design). It has a Sauer & Sohn (German gunmaker)stamp on the barrels and matching serial number on the watertable, barrels, and forearm. It has no proofmarks or any other markings anywhere on it which is quite a mystery. The grip is made of horn and it carries 30 inch steel barrels. It's point of origin will I'm afraid forever be a mystery. I had always wanted a gun built on the Jones Underlever design and couldn't pass the gun up when it became available. It has more drop at heel than I like and although I've shot the gun well on low gun claybirds, I missed several woodcock that day that I really thought I should have hit. I like hunting with "odd" guns and this one fits the bill.

Does a Tweed hat and pipe come with that gun?
Sheesh, even if you can't hit with it, you gotta look good while hunting.
Isn't that all that matters?

That gun is simply a work of art.

It's beautiful. I'm glad it's still being used in the field and not just a piece of jewelry for someone's gun cabinet. thumbsup
