Just curious but is anyone out setting traps for this year yet? I've been told by some old timers that it's to early and the fur is not yet prime. Just curious as to your thoughts and when your planning to set....unless you've already laid out some steel.

Dave, my trapping days are long gone but I'd say it's a bit early to be making sets. What you catch will be blue and certainly be of less value. Another few weeks and furs should begin to prime up. Be patient and enjoy the season! Muab

Muab,
Thanks for the response. And yes....my traps are still hanging in my shed waiting for a little attention from me. I bring it up as yesterday when I was sitting out there enjoying the change from calm, to windy and back again, I had this really nice red take me (and him) by surprise. He kept looking at me for about 3 or 4 minutes trying to determine if I were just woods or an evil human. He didn't come closer, but he didn't run away. He just turned and walked in front of me....yet in the heavier brush. He was a nice specimen of Red, yet not one to "want" to take just yet. That's why I ask.

My brother prepped some sets two weeks ago in Tioga County. He set traps last Sunday and the brother that lives there is going to tend to them.
He also prepped a set in front of one of my trail cams. This weekend he wants to pull the card to see what came thru.

I'm not out there yet but I'll be setting in 2 weeks. Fur prices will be low and unprimed furs will be worthless. I will try to concentrate on coyotes this year.

The only thing prime this early will be some of the biggest boar 'coons. I will likely put some sets around my property after archery season. I want to get rid of some of the 'possums. The year we bought or property, my son and I caught more than thirty 'possums with ten traps around an 18 acre field.
This may be the first year in many that I don't put up any fur. I'll let anything except possums go-unless a 'yote steps into one of the simple 'possums sets, and I may get another fisher tag this year
