I see these every late-summer to fall and often wonder if they are edible. If they are Jacks then they are poisonous, but I am not sure and can't find my book ---- since our remodel project!

Hey there, If you can, post more pictures of these. Split some in half and show us what they look like on the inside, too. We should also get a good and up close picture of the underside so we can see the gills. To me, they look like Chanterelles, but yeah..could be Jacks. How do they smell?

Those really look like apricot Chantrelle's. I would have to see the underside better to determine, but here is the "trick". Jack-O-Lanters wil have what we all think of as the common gills underneath. When I say common, I mean very uniformed straight gills. The Chants will have what we unprofessional mycologists refer to as "ridges". Thicker lines underneath, and not as linear as gills.

I was trying to avoid telling him what it should smell like so he could avoid being influenced by it lol

I should add. If those are Chants, they are beyond CHOICE mushrooms. They are incredibly delicious, and highly sought after. Much like Morel's, and some even prefer them to Morel's. Wegman's prices should confirm that notion.

It's hard to tell from those pics, but I don't think those are chants. Chanterelles are one of my favorites and there are there are also black ones that are called black trumpets I like even more. The gills are the best identifier and I often find the jacks near the chants, so have somebody who knows the difference show you how to Identify each. It's easy once you are shown.

The good news is, if he gets froggy, tries them, and they're jack-o-lanterns, he more than likely won't die, unless he's quite feeble, infirmed, or allergic ? He'll just suffer such gastro-intestinal pain, that he'd wish he were dead.

Never eat Jacks, you'll be on the toilet for days.
