I'm not interested in a cabinet. I need a 12 -18 gun safe. A live in Apollo so it will need to be within and hours drive.

If you buy a fire proof one it becomes tax deductible, as your friends at the IRS demand that you maintain your tax records, so buy a nice one and throw last years tax return in it.

I'd defer to Loggy on that one Jim, but it would be great if it were true.

Its true, you are required to keep tax records for 7 years, a safe is the only safe way to do it.

Fire proof being the point, not all safes are created equal.
There's many ratings and the most important is where you place it in your home along with how hot the fire gets and for how long, you get what you pay for, and as heat rises, your basement is where you should place it.

A bit tough to admit, but der Marlboro Man is r.... ri.....ri..... GOSH, I still can't say it. Unfortunately, my $400 10-gun (that really is a 6 gun) safe from Tractor Supply doesn't qualify. *banghead*

If you don't mind building one into a closet or the likes, simply adding a couple layers of 5/8 dry wall to the outsides of your safe will add hours of protection from heat and fire, any one building a new house can easily build a gun vault thats both safe and cheap.
Flerooo why so many guns? Are you one of them there prepper guys? :0

If you like.. Modular safe is good, it can be easily assembled in your home, and also the cost is little less, and the main advantage is you can move it easily. Bestgunsafeguy

Well, the fireproof safe falls under the "Miscellaneous Itemize Deductions" which is subject to reducing your taxable income ONLY IF your total miscellaneous deductions exceed your Adjusted Gross Income by 2%. Also, your total Itemized deductions must exceed the standard deduction for that year. The standard deduction varies depending upon your filing status such as MFJ (Married Filing Joint), S (Single), MFS (Married filing Separate), HoH (Head of Household).
So, for example if you purchased a fireproof safe to keep your tax records in and said safe cost $1,000, and your joint adjusted gross income for that year was $75,000, then 2% of the AGI is $1,500. So, none of your fireproof safe is deductible because your total miscellaneous itemized deductions is less than the $1,500.
And I don't even want to discuss the answer to the question should you get audited and the agent ask you what other items you keep in said safe.
