Dance, my Mountain Cur has the strange habit of bringing turtles home. Here's one she found and brought home today.
She seems rather proud of herself .

I bet she could easily be trained to be a shed hunting dog.

Hey Grey...
Mountain Curs have a reputation of being a pretty tough & hardy breed. I'll bet you could teach her to dive in farm ponds and bring up snappers!

Robert Ruark wrote in "The old man and the Boy" how any good pointer would point turtles for hours on end, and should never be punished for such indiscretions.
My golden points both snakes and snappers, when they move he barks like crazy.

I've had some fun with dogs and turtles over the years.
When I was about 15, went small game hunting in Perry Co. with one of dad's old amigos that had a new beagle. He had high hopes for that dog, but it never measured up to his previous bunny dog that had died about a year or so before he got the new dog.
We got into an area of thick brush and one rabbit went out, but the dog was heading into an old stone house foundation and missed the action. He did finally get to yappin' a bit in there, so I went in to see what he was onto.
Turned out he'd found an old snappin' turtle shell that was the cause for his excitement. Sherb hollered and wanted to know what the beagle had found, so I toted the shell out to show him. He was less than impressed.
Sherb was a great guy, but one of those souls who grumbled constantly and swore the world was against him.
When we got home, dad asked him how the day had went. Sherb said your boy and my dog make a great pair. They'd both sooner fiddle with turtle shells, than find and kill rabbits.
I had a beagle that was skeert to death of box turtles and our old yeller lab would roll them around all day if you'd let her.
Just came across one at our club the other week, on one of the field archery courses. First one I've seen this year.
