When buying a boat from a private owner, is there a title for the boat and the trailer too? is the registration for the boat transferable to new owner?

In my experience, both have titles. Typically boat registration will transfer to new owner.

In PA boats are titled through the PA Fish & Boat Commission. Boats have a haul ID Number plus title number. Trailers are titled by the PA Dept of Transportation same as cars having a VIN and title number.

Cavscout, what were the fees you had to pay besides the 6% sales tax? ie. notary fee, transfer fee, registration, etc. I'm not asking for the amounts, just don't want to over look anything. Thanks for you info.

on the boat it was an $18 registration fee $15 title fee on the trailer it was $22.50 title fee $6.00 registration fee
this was on a 14 ft boat with the trailer. not sure on the notary fee i dont have that receipt anymore. you will need to know the hull id number, make, model, year, length, capacity of persons, and material the hull is made of.
as for the trailer which is easy just the weight of the trailer, load capacity, year made and VIN number.
all in all i think it was a little over $100 for everything. also it was gifted to me so no fees on that and it was in 2009 but i dont think the fees have changed much.
