The biggest thing is to hunt them where they are at the time. They can be there one day and miles away the next day.

Their vital zone is different than a deer, look it up , easiest way I can describe it is a triangle upside down from base of skull to edge of shoulder to elbow. You shoot behind the shoulder your very close to guts, bears vitals are higher and more forward.

One method that some use to get help is to go to the local watering hole and suggest that when the bear is on your pickup truck the bar will be open to those that helped get him there. It can get expensive, but I'm told it works.

i got my bear tag.... yes i have a way to get it out (tractor, truck,.......bulldozer) but if it does what my buck did i might cry. that means that i would have to take it out through the neighbors property and some of you guys know what i have gone through with him already.

If its in pa go get a wco, your bear will be brought out, unless you shot it on private property you didnt have permission on.

Just ask real nice. Most folks will be happy to let you on if you shot your bear somewhere else and it ran onto their property. Have a case of bud in the truck when you drag it out. Gift's are appreciated.

They have the right to go on if there is illegal activity. It does not give them the right to recover game shot legally that ran onto property the shooter does not have permission to hunt. I called up a few years ago when I hit a buck with the bow that ran onto posted property. The deputy could do nothing about it as he needed permission himself.

I've killed one PA black bear, passed one up, and had a giant get past me because I had no shot on the running bear (bear drive). So I believe I'm half decent at hunting them. One thing I'd like to add is Bears do not get killed in the open. They get killed in thick cover. A 7mm mag with a 4-12X is nice but you'll kill more Bear with a peep sighted .45-70 if only because the scoped magnum will tempt you to sit where you can see down the mountainside rather than watching the trail through the laurel like you should be. My late FIL was in on a lot of bear kills and he liked to say " bear are killed at 30 yards not 300".

Good luck! Bear hunting is my absolute favorite. Best advice I can give is if its moving; just keep shooting.

One more bear hunting question: It says in "the book" (you know....the guide) that scents are not permitted when bear hunting. So, maybe this is an obviously stupid question, but is it permissible to spray my boots with fox pee? I have some leftover from last years trapping.....don't plan on using it for this year (I will re-up with new) but a cover scent sure couldn't hurt.
Thoughts?

Cover scents are allowed. Attractants are not.

Cover scents are allowed. Attractants are not. Thanks Mike. I suppose a good am shower in a diluted formula of this "substance" couldn't hurt. OTOH, nobody will want to come near me.....except fox and hungry coyote's.

I knew a fellow that worked at the neighboring funeral home that went hunting in Canada one year. He said he always packed light to travel since this outfitter didn't have baited stands but the odds of seeing bear were still high. That particular year he was eating a peanut butter sandwich in a patch of laurel when he noticed movement below him to the left. A bear was checking the wind downwind from his position. He said he opened up the two pieces of bread and placed them in the branches in front of him. As the bear was circling around him from the left, he shot it. Is eating lunch considered baiting?

Happened to me too. In '91 I was sitting on Jackson mtn in Hillsgrove Sullivan county for the first day of Bear. At 7 am I opened a pack of cookies and started eating one. At that time I noticed a Bear making his way toward me. He was a 100 yards out so I let him work his way in. At 25 yards he stopped and sniffed the breeze and smelled my cookies. He then made a beeline for me. He was about 80 pounds so I scared him off.
