Well, it's getting close to that time when the ramps start popping up throughout the wooded hills across PA. I usually start seeing them around the beginning of trout season here. (The REAL trout season, not the one that started today in the southeastern Counties) If you pick them, what do you make with them?

Thanks for the defining post Stroupy. I forgot that the name of the leek is not known as a ramp everywhere. That's all I've ever heard them called while growing up here in Somerset County. They even have a big ramp festival in Elkins West Virginia.

From a thread I made on another site.
The Ramps (Wild Leeks) are just starting to poke up here in Washington County. Mostly from 2" to 3" out of the ground so far. Good bit late, which was to be expected after the hard winter. My Garlic is also starting to poke up... 'bout the same size as the ramps. SOOO, things should get going a bit if we can hold some warmer temps. Morel's should be late compared to the past many years as well. BUT, that will be a good thing, as the unseasonal heat here in SW PA, has been killing the Morel season by the 1st week of May most of the recent past years.

Any one that brags about eating leeks, enjoys sleeping alone.
Because there is not a woman alive that will allow you to sleep in the house after eating them!

They are great in potato soup. I transplanted some last year to a few places on our property. I'll plant some more this year and hopefully will be able to walk down and dig them here in a few years.
