After taking my pup Thicket out all spring for the woodcock, I left her at home today and took my older dog Emma. Emma has been a slow starter and will never make much of a grouse dog but for the last couple of years has really come on as a woodcock dog. We tried a new covert today and was pleasantly surprised, moving 7 birds in about 1 1/2 hours. This is what the cover looked like. A narrow stream bottom with some barberry and multiflora rose and downed pine trees.
Here are some of Emma's points.
Yea she'll never will any prizes for her tailset but I love her just the same. thumbsup

having run my setters in field trials I always wondered why so much emphasis was placed on where the tail was when the dog pointed a bird. A dog finds and points a bird with his/her nose, not the tail. I note the 'cherry tail' on Emma. This denotes a merry setter who loves doing what she is doing. Good to see Emma has such a good home.
