Our first day out with the hounds for the season. We always start the Saturday after flintlock season. We split the 4 hounds into 2 groups of 2 and came into the woods from 2 directions, well both sets of hounds put out coyotes. Before noon we had 2 on the tailgate.

Hi George, how was your season? My 2 sons each got a six point 1 on the last Friday and 1 on the last day. My son who got the one on the last day is 25 years old and is just out of the military and it was his first buck, the last deer he got was 6 years ago was a doe when he was on leave from Iraq. I got a nice 8 point the last day of flintlock. Good year myself and both of my sons got bucks.

We had a fair season at Camp Rip-N-Tear, Dean. Mine was not the best. I had a string of five straight years that I had taken a buck come to an end this year. I blew out a knee in archery season and that limited the amount of walking I could do. Instead of getting better, the knee is getting worse and it is pretty much a given that I will have surgery fairly soon. Goes with the territory, being my age. Glad to hear that the boys did well. That makes for a pretty good season, doesn't it.

Our best at camp "Deer Hunters Point". I tagged out with a doe on the first RAINY Saturday then the 8 point on the last day of the late flintlock. My oldest son and I spent bear season at my camp in Clinton County "White Pine" saw a quick flash of a bear in the laurel but no shooting. Then started coyote season with my hounds and 1 day out we kill 2 that is a good day for sure.

Do you run them out of woods in hopes of getting a crack at them in fields?
Just wondering how it's done with dogs.

Dutch,
The hounds chase them just about anywhere. Coyotes don't run in a particular fashion the small red female we shot as she ran across an open field the guy hit her at about 250 yards with a 7mm mag. down in her tracks, she was about 300 yards ahead of the hounds. The nice gray male was shot running along an old railroad bed about .25 mile ahead of the hounds with a 12 gag shotgun #4 shot 3.5 mag. 2 shots to stop him. I missed one about 75 yards ahead of the hounds 2 shots from my 357 mag revolver, it was in a field when they saw it and I missed it as it was running into cover, then it came back around and I missed it again with 1 shot just before it holed up under an old abandoned farm building. When we get started on a hunt we plan where everyone will post with the hopes of getting a good shot then my son and I take the hounds in. We use the topo map feature on the Garmin to plan the hunt trying to cover open fields between wood plots and post the creek bottoms.
