Be careful folks.Click for story Man dies after falling through ice on Keystone Lake while ice fishing January 17, 2015 4:40 PM
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A man died today after he fell through ice on Keystone Lake while ice fishing, state police at the Kittanning barracks said.
James J. Whitlinger, 56, of Avonmore had been drilling holes in the ice about ½-mile south of the Atwood boat launch on Keystone Lake in Cowanshannock, Armstrong County, about 7:50 a.m. when he fell through, state police said. Other fishermen reported Mr. Whitlinger missing when they saw the holes he had drilled and his gear, but could not see him.

Yet another piece of evidence that fishing is dangerous.
I would not ever be drilling holes in ice unless I had a PFD on, and it should be required to ice fish, if it isn't already.

I was out on the ice yesterday. 9" of clear ice. My buddies caught a few, but I struck out.
The ice could be a 1' thick and I would never go alone, I was with a group of 4 fisherman yesterday.
It's a real shame this man went thru, prayers to his family.
PFD's are not required, but sure make sense.

I agree Bushy. It's sad that such an event had happen. I recall when I was in my teens....you know...when your invincible, I was ice fishing on a lake and there were several people out on this lake. Well, I was headed in and tired, not really paying attention and darn if I didn't step right into a drilled hole when I was about 20 yards from the shore. Well, the ice was very thick so it didn't crack, but my leg went completely in and man!!!! it was a SHOCK to my entire body!!! For about 20 seconds I just couldn't move!! And it was just my leg!! Cold!! WOW. Well, I pulled my wet leg out and made it to my car. I gained a great respect for ice fishing and cold after that.

Depressing. Was out this morning with my 4 year old. Slooooooow. 8" ice but it was talking.
I wonder where exactly this happened? What part of state? Not enough ice?
It'll be ok out there... A pic to cheer up the room:
She's good at clearing ice from the holes and drinking hot chocolate.

Back in my teens I was checking 'rat traps in March around a small pond. The ice was "spongy" but I decided to walk across anyway. (Stupid youthful indiscretion) Well, about half way across the ice gave way and I dropped in with hip boots on and a pack basket slung on my back. I reached around into my pack basket, pulled out my ax and chopped my way to shore. Emptied out my boots, stripped down and wrung my pants out, put my boots back on and finished checking my line. Should'a been dead but I never gave it a second thought, only to be eternally wary of ice in the spring. Guess the Lord had different plans for me that day.

Talk about dumb bunny stuff to do. Way back in the 1950s, a buddy and I walked across the Susquehanna River from New Cumberland to Steelton. Looking back on it, if we had broken through the ice they would never have found our bodies.

Sorry to hear of loss. Family are in my prayers.
I carry emergency ice pics, rope plus wear a Mustang Survival jacket and always test ice with a spud when venturing out. When I look back to what I did in my younger days I that the Good Lord that im even here. One cannot be too safe.

Muttley, my Old Man told me once that it's by the grace of God that kids grow up to become adults....and as I look back I know for a fact he was right! I did some really dumb and dangerous stuff as a kid! smileys-whistling-823718
